It is 2"x4" wire fencing... heaver guage than 1/2x/2 hardware cloth. It comes in rolls 24" to 48" wide and up to 50'. you can sort of see it in the 3rd pic I posted.  It is about a 1/3 the cost of HC.   Here is a link to what I used.

Thank you! I have seen that before and wondered if it was good or not.

Not good for the sides as raccoons can reach through, but for top and bottom of run it made sense to me.

Oh, I do see it on the top and bottom of your run. Do you have hardware cloth on the sides? I was wondering if your wire fencing could be used all around and just an added layer of hardware cloth over the bottom 2', or is that overkill?

I thought about doing the sides half and half, but that add a LOT more cutting and "binding" (for lack of a better word). I used 48" HC everywhere except top and bottom. you can check out my coop page. Might help. My uprights are spaced 48" apart and the run is 48" wide.  Made for very little cutting and no "seams". Also, I didn't really want to "experiment" with a tried and true way of doing things at the risk of losing a chicken if I was wrong... better safe than sorry was my thinking during construction.

and as an afterthought...If you are going to lock your birds up in a coop at night, you probably don't need a bomb proof run...on the other hand that one night you don't make it home as planned to lock them up could be a bad night...

Hi - Can I get some clarification on what to use on the bottom of a protected run? We are in the process of building a new coop with a run attached and I was going to put hardware cloth on the bottom instead of burying it down one foot. 2" x 4" welded wire can be used instead? I'm super paranoid about predators even though the only thing I have seen dig anywhere around the edge of their run now is a chipmunk! Freeloader . . . . So say a raccoon succeeded and dug underneath the run, he could not get in? I have been leaving their pop door open on these humid nights for more ventilation.

we have a 6 ft run and I am so glad we did.  It's so nice to be able to just go in there with a rake and clean up or dole out treats. and sometimes me and the kids like to take one of those foam garden kneeling pads and just go sit in there and hang out with them lol.  we could never do that with a short run.  Plus I have noticed they like being able to stretch their wings getting up to higher perches.  we got all our wire at Home Depot, we have hardcloth wire on the bottom 2 feet and buried another 18 inches straight down.  The top 4 feet and "ceiling" are just 1 in chicken wire
