gimpy chicken - I'm worried

We recently got some chicks from a farmer friend of mine.  He offered us chicks after a raccoon depleted our entire flock.  One of the chicks he gave me has a gimpy foot.  I pointed it out and he said it got pecked by one of the larger chickens in his barn.  He said I didn't have to take it but my kids were with me and of course they fell in love with it and wouldn't leave it behind.  She doesn't seem to put any weight on it and it splays out when she does.  It's very twitchy when she lifts it up.  It has a scab-like thing on the ankle which was there when we got her.  It also seems like she can't or won't curl up her foot claws (sorry, don't know what their toes are called!).  Here's a couple of pics so you can see.  It's not a big deal now when she's  tiny but when's she's big it will be a problem, I know.  I'd love some advice on what to do.

It looks a lot like a condition called splay leg or spraddle leg. With that, people usually put a band aid and sorta tape the legs together, but leave enough space between them so it can walk ok. I dont know how long they leave it on....theres videos on youtube about it though. If it gets to be a problem, some people would chop it off. sickbyc.gif i know it sounds aweful, but there are some one legged chickens out there. Hope this sorta helped. Good luck. thumbsup.gif

Chickens are very addicting droolin.gif , everyone here is a chicken addict yippiechickie.gif, people may look at you weird when you tell them, but its way better to be addicted to chickens then all the other stuff out there.............

Thanks a lot.  I was wondering if that might be it.  I've thought about amputation - but how the heck do you do that?  A kitchen knife?!!  Uggg....  I'll google and see what I come up with.
