I was at work on Saturday, talking to a co worker about my chickens. I told her my sister had said, when I got my chicks, "How are you gonna get eggs with no rooster?"  My co worker looked at me and said "You can't get eggs unless you have a rooster!" th.gif I told her yes, you can. A rooster is only needed to help protect the flock and to fertilize the eggs so you can get chicks. She didn't believe me. I told her to go ask one of the guys that is a country boy. He told her you had to have a rooster in order to get eggs! ep.gif  I could not believe it!! I ended up polling all my co workers in the area I was in and only ONE knew you did not have to have a rooster to have eggs! gig.gif And this is from a group of people that have lived in a rural, farming area all their lives! hide.gif

Just because they grew up in a rural area doesn't mean they know anything about anything.

Some of the most appalling ignorance about poultry raising I've ever encountered came from country folks. And because they'd grown up "in the country" they were dead certain they knew what they were talking about and could not be dissuaded. OK then, go ahead and raise your chicks and poults on layer feed just as you've always done. They were the same folks who asked me that fall how I got my turkeys to grow so big!

Of course some of the most knowledgeable people I've ever met came from the country too so you can find all kinds. WHERE they came from does not matter nearly so much as WHAT they did while they were there.

To tell one on myself we always had Domineckers (Dominiques) in my family as I was growing up. It wasn't until I was a grown man and gained access to a wider world of other poultry keepers did I come to realize that we'd never had Dominiques but had instead been keeping Barred Rocks all along!

gig.gif My mother saw a picture of a Barred Rock and asked me if it was a Dominecker. She loves Domineckers!! And yes, that is what she calls them.  Actually, in case anyone is feeling this way, I, in no way, shape or form, meant any disrespect to country people. I am now one of them. I just thought it was funny the general feeling is you must have a rooster to get eggs. Everyone got a good laugh out of it. They were still talking about it today. th.gif And, like all things, it has made it almost around the entire plant.  It's just so funny!

I would say virtually 100% of people that I've told about my one hen, has said, "But you can't get eggs without a rooster."  I live in the suburbs.

I too have dealt with this with my neighbors! LOL. I've also had people think that the roosters lay eggs as well lau.gif
