DO THEY NEED TO BE ROUND? WE WERE THINKING OF JUST RIPPING A 2X4 IN HALF?? HOW FAR UP SHOULD THEY BE ? MY CHICKIES ARE 10 WEEKS.
that's just what we did. We live in New England and the square roosts will help them stay warm in the winter (it causes them to sit on their feet, on a round roost, their toes would be wrapped around the roost and exposed). Just make sure to sand the edges a bit, just so there aren't any sharp right angles for them to slice a toe on. Or...don't even bother ripping them, as ChickNhood said...just tack them in place wide side up. We have roosts at several levels in our run. 2 at 2ft and 1 at 4 feet. They'll use all of them during the day, but in the evening will opt for the higher roost. There are also roosts of different heights in the coop. The higher the roost, the safer they appear to feel.
