Sprayed weed killer in my yard

So my husband bought some weed killer, the kind you attach the bottle to the hose and spray on the weeds. We sprayed the weeds in a part of the yard that has no grass yet with the hopes that the weeds would die off and not blow seeds into the existing grass. This is the kind of week killer meant for lawns, but we don't actually have a lawn in that area. It says that pets can reenter the area after the poison dries. These are not weeds that the chickens eat, but they have been known to go through those weeds looking for the bugs on them. Do you know if or when it will be safe for them to return to that area? I really have no way to keep them out when they are free ranging because they can fly over the fence into the yard. How long will residue stay on the ground or on the plants and if the bugs eat the weeds and they eat the bugs, is that a hazard. I have them cooped for now, but they are not happy about being left in all day.

I recommend that you call the company and ask them if the weed killer is toxic to poultry. There was a recent thread similar to yours, the results wernt good.
In the meantime, you can hang a head of cabbage or lettuce in the pen to keep your birds occupied, watermelon works too.

I did call the company and they said they had no information regarding poultry or chickens specifically, only not to let grazing animals eat the treated plants (but these plants are toxic to animals anyway and our goats and chickens pretty much stay away from it). I am not too terribly worried because they don't really go in that area and usually stay in the yard where the good grass is or near their coop, which is a ways away, but I figure they will be like children and not want to go somewhere until I don't want them to and then suddenly decide that is where they want to be. I could kick DH, though, since I specifically told him not to use that stuff at all. It is a small enough area I might could just cover the area up with some scrap plywood. It wouldn't be very pretty, but it might work.

I don't know if vinegar is dangerous to poultry or not, but it is a GREAT weed killer. Get the extra strength kind, put in a sprayer and spray on the weeds. By the end of the day, they are dead.

I will try vinegar, but I live in the desert and we have some NASTY weeds. I am not even entirely sure that weed is the right word for what we have. Anything is worth trying, though. Thanks.

I have never heard of using vinegar as weed killer, but it seems like a great cost effective alternative to the chemical poisons for this purpose. I have a large bricked area that that is overrun by weeds. Hopefully this is the solution.
