Trying to ID breed on a couple of these.....

I'm trying to figure out breeds on a couple of my pullets.  I bought Shadow, Coco, and Cinamon from a lady that said they were Olive Eggers.  I've heard that is a general term for an Aracuna mixed with anything that lays a brown egg.

This is Shadow, and she is about 18 Weeks old.

Shadow with Coco in back.

Cinnamon and Coco look exactly alike, and all three came from the same hatch.

Then I have Gina, and Lulu, who are 3 weeks younger.  We bought them from the feed store, and they were both said to be Silver Laced Wyandottes.  Lulu obviously isn't.  I was thinking Australorp, or maybe Black Jersey?

I'd guess that Shadow, Coco, and Cinnamon are Oliver Eggers or Easter Eggers. :) They're very pretty!

Gina's a Silver Laced Wyandotte (and a really beautiful one, too!) and yep, Lulu definitely isn't! :) Look at the bottoms of her feet - if they're yellow, she's probably a Jersey Giant, if they're white, she's probably a Black Australorp. This isn't always a for-sure way to tell, especially if a chicken is from a hatchery, but it might help. If you wait till they're all the way grown, you can probably tell by size - a JG will be very big. wink.png

Easter Eggers (or Americana) are as a mish-mashed breed with definite Araucana, so technically they can lay any color of egg, but "Olive Eggers" have been bred to lay Olive Eggs.

The Ameraucana lays ONLY blue eggs and has a pea comb.smile.png

an EE is any mixed chicken that has araucana or ameraucana in its background some wheres, more specifically the breed club says

Quote:
any chicken that possesses the blue egg gene, but doesn’t fully meet any breed descriptions as defined in the APA and/or ABA standards.  Further, even if a bird meets an Ameraucana standard breed description, but doesn’t meet a variety description or breed true at least 50% of the time it is considered an Easter Egg chicken.

to make an olive egger you cross a blue egg layer with a brown egg layer thus making an EE. an example is a blue egg layer (araucana, ameraucana, or ee) over a marans or welsummer the resulting pullets should lay green (olive) colored eggs thus also resulting in an EE

There are genes for brown eggs

a gene for blue eggs   (The blue egg gene and the white egg gene are actually alleles for those that understand)

a gene for white eggs.

eggs are either white or blue because of the genetics involved.

Chickens that lay:

white eggs have two genes for white egg ( no blue egg gene) and no brown egg genes.

brown eggs have 2 genes for white egg shell plus genes for brown egg shell.

blue eggs have one blue egg gene( plus a white egg gene) or two blue egg genes ( no genes for white egg) and no brown egg genes.

green eggs have one or two blue egg genes ( no genes for white egg) and brown egg genes.

Pink eggs are just a tinted brown egg. There are no pink egg genes.
