Are both parents barred rocks?

Stephanie in VA  3 kids, 2 dogs, 3 cats, and 14 chickens- hens: 2 leghorns, 2 golden comets,         2 australorps, 2 barred rocks, 1 NH Red, 1 LF buff brahma. Roosters: LF light brahma, 2 bantam cochins (1 black/multi colored frizzle, and one buff/red colored) blue orpington. My neighbors RIR rooster has recently moved in. I guess he is staying too

Should be but I am not sure...because it's hatchery stock from a local feed store. Why? Does it look mixed with other breed?

If only the mother hen was barred, this baby would be a rooster.

Barred adult roosters pass the barring gene to all offspring (even if the hen is not barred) so the white dot would only show a barred baby, not a sex link.

Its too early to tell the sex of this baby from just a picture.

When it starts growing, watch its comb. The roosters' crows will begin turning reddish in a couple weeks.

Sometimes wing development helps to identify sex. This one looks like it is developing wing feathers quickly...maybe a pullet sign  :)

If in 3 weeks, the comb is more yellow than red, I would guess pullet.

No, it isn't too early for a Barred Rock. They can be sexed as soon as they are fluffy after hatching.

The problem is that the picture is taken from above and doesn't show the overall color and barring on the wings, or the leg color.

This link is good for Barred Rocks, Cuckoo Marans and Dominiques and has very good photos.

Great to know!!! Thanks for sharing this link. I am fascinated by chicken genetics. I didn't know about leg color sexing!!!

The dot looks like a male dot according to the link Speckled Hen posted.

It looks like a male. The dot is more spread out. When you have a female the dot is more clear as a whole (a full dot).
