Khaki Campbell gender identification problem...please help :- ) - Page 3

Post some pictures, the drakes turn tan bodied (kinda like chocolate milk) with darker chests and of course the dark head. Love our Khakis they keep us bug free.

The entire duck is darker.  The heads are NOT really darker than the body.

 

Also, why would a person not want to keep 4 drakes?  Seems like all boys is good.  (Not enough girls is definately bad.  This is why I keep getting more and more ducks.)

She wants eggs, to keep four drakes isn't going to do that. To keep four drakes and add 1 or 2 or even three ducks is also bad. For every drake you have there should be 3 ducks or more typically so no female is over bred or injured. So if someone only wants 3-5 ducks total, then 4 should be girls and 1 drake.

Okay, I finally was able to get some pictures of my Khakis (luv em). I don't mean to high jack someone else's thread, but thought these examples might help several of us identify our Khaki Cambells. As you can tell, I had to bribe them to get all four at once

Their baby feathers were so lovely, and now while molting, they are somewhat of a motley mess .

 

The one in the top middle with the greenish beak is my guess for a boy.

He? is in the middle of the three here. I'm not convinced (or maybe it is wishful thinking) those are drake feathers. I think they may just be the black feathers, which have always been very dark, working their way off their backs from under the wings .

 

I have decided that I just have to give it more time and be quite patient. They are right at 16 weeks, and still molting. So it should be obvious within another month or so. I couldn't get a real close up, but the new feathers on the three lighter ones' heads are all coming in lighter.

 

When they finish molting, will they still have the dark stripe on the wings? It is almost iridescent in sunlight. So pretty.

They look like all boys to me. I have 3 khaki campbell ducks age 10 weeks, 13 weeks, and 17 weeks. None of mine look like yours. I'll take some pictures today.

None of mine have the very dark feathering under their wings and their heads are very close in color to their bodies. Mine are also heavily laced.

I see some boys...

I honor your experience with ducks and Khakis, so this makes me ever so sad. Still, as I said above, I have to hang on to a tiny thread of hope until they all reach full maturity, which I am guessing is about 20 weeks (?). By then, if I am correct, they should have their full adult plumage, and I might just find an egg in the coop. This morning, after cleaning their pool, yep, that one with the darker color and green beak was mating or at least practicing.

 

I am beginning to turn my thoughts to the 'what if' and the 'Plan B'. I cannot afford to feed 4 drakes, and I cannot imagine eating any of them. I have learned so much from them, and have grown quite close to them. Hope I don't have to start all over again.

Joy, they are in adult plumage. Darker heads, even toned chocolate bodies, the heads will just become more defined and drake curls will set in what feels like over night. Boys can range from the deep warm red/brown body, to the lighter chocolate milk with the dark heads. 

 

girls can be semi solid, but most have beautiful lacing. Our girls fade badly here with the sun, and molt back to dark. Wildpeas pictures are good examples of female Khaki.

On the above picture you can see the drakes band of feather on the wings just slightly, but how they differ from the duck in the first picture.
