Adopting ex battery hens

Not sure where to post this so it"s going here!
I am very interested in finding an organization in the US (CA preferably) that rescues battery hens.
All I can find online are rescues in the UK.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
I know they exist here somewhere!
Has anyone ever rescued any?
From what I understand they make great pets and even though look horrible at first, can turn inot gorgeous creatures!
Any help is appreciated!
 
I don't think there is one in the USA. There's a chicken rescue in MN and I often see farm animal rescues with chickens. You can check on Petfinder for contacts that might know something. You can search under birds and type in chicken or use the breed list for birds and click on chicken, plus use your state or zipcode. It's amazing how many chickens are listed up for adoption at the L.A. shelters.

You could always start an organization for battery hens if you wanted to. I think one or two people from BYC have rescued battery hens, on their own. I guess the trick is to call up and give the impression you just want to buy some hens for the stew pot, so they don't get all paranoid that you are an animal rights activist trying to cause trouble. You could try a search on here, if you haven't done so already. I think it was last year.

If you contact your local AC, there is a possibility that you could become a "shelter" for birds. I do not know all that it intales, but hey, who knows. Put adds out there on FreeCycle.com for poultry, sometimes people are bored with their feathered companions, and its worth a try.
 
I am on a Yahoo group called Ex-Battery Hens. It is UK based but there are members in the US and a few in CAli if I recall.
You can also look online and see where there are Battery Houses and just call the 'owner' and ask if you can get some birds before they go to the rendering plant. Many will give them away to give them 'one last shot'.
I commend your efforts on trying to save some of these ladies

A neighbor of mine told me years ago that all you have to do is go to our local egg factory and ask for their expired hens and they'll give them to you (they discard them every year or so). Do you have a battery near where you live? Keep trying, those hens need you.

Follow a truck. I tried that for a while but ended up with zero results.

I bought 2 hens from a farmer who sold eggs and the hens were in a small building with no outside time and no clean floor. I took the worst 2 I could find, Unfortunately I was not able to save them. They died shortly after I got them.

A battery hen is one that has been caged for eggs. They are usually "retired" (culled) at around 18 mos. Go to http://www.upc-online.org/ to United Poultry Concerns. They are an organization designated for the humane treatment and well-being of chickens and other poultry. They have alot of info on battery hens and their rehabiliation. Also, www.petfinder.com and do a search under Bird, then chicken and plug in your zipcode for agencies near you. I know that back east it seems there are a couple organizations that seem to get rescued hens. And, lastly, I know that with the floods recently in the midwest, there have been some case of poultry farms that have chicks in need of rehoming-the last one I heard of was in NE I believe. It's a big thing in the UK to 'rescue' these birds. But AFAIK, it's not a big deal here in the US, at least not yet. If you are into raising chickens for social justice reasons, it's an interesting idea to persue.
