Composting

things are looking good, the first piles, I made three from each trailer load, were turned, and the stuff is breaking down real nice, I stuck a thermometer in the top of one pile and it read almost 120 degrees. I got the second trailer load this week and made 3 more piles, got the grass cut to cover it with, and will update next week. When the stuff gets done, I will get the composted yard waste from the city and mix and till everything and make raised beds around them. Later.

got the rest of the horse sh*t and grass clippings composted and spread around the new garden spot. Don't know if I read about lasagna composting here on BYC or someplace else but it sure works. I spread the last of the compost today and ran the tiller over it, and while I was at it I increased the size of the new garden. All for next year.

If you have an excess of woody, high carbon materials, and not enough green wet stuff to add, consider adding any other high nitrogen source. One year, I got a truck load of fall leaves, dumped it into my garden, threw in a couple of shovelfuls of urea, and some soil, watered it well and covered it with plastic. It cooked down amazingly well before planting time.
