The Ultimate Fowl Feeder!

When we started raising backyard chickens one of our issues was finding a proper feeder. We tried a number of different types and found that all of them wasted significant amounts of feed. We also realized that the feeders did not dispense the feed very efficiently and that we needed to refill them more frequently than we thought necessary. My husband designed this solution which he builds in his Morgan Hill sheet metal shop.

Hens "billing out" the contents of conventional feeders can result in up to 25% feed waste. Because the TUFF feeder openings are just large enough for the hens to get their beaks in -- but not bill out the feed -- waste is virtually eliminated!

The feeder holds 25 pounds of layer crumble -- enough for 12 hens for approximately one week. And, because it is gravity-fed, the feed slides down and is smoothly dispensed until empty. Constructed of rust-proof, 20-gauge Galaxy steel, this material is RoHS approved and does not outgas dangerous chemicals and will not harbor bacteria.

I like that it hangs, so you don't have to worry about ants getting in it. I think it needs a "flap" that you can flip down over the feed openings at night to deter rats/mice. My only concern is hens scatching or injuring their beaks on the metal. I've seen posts where this has happened with the metal feeding trays.

Chiming in...  It looks very efficient.  I wonder about birds cutting their comb on the metal.  Did it get smoothed after it was cut?  I had a hen cut her comb on cut plastic.   roll.png

Is that a laced bird I see in the background?  Laced birds are my favorite!

We do sell a rodent repeller plate that you can cover the feeding holes with. Send me your email and I'll send you pix. I haven't updated the web site with this info, but there's some other info at www.backyardchick.com
