Not over salting, vinegar, acid acidic. Brown sugar, molasses, add and taste. Re-add all other flavors spices and such after you get it right, will be mmm good, just more than you figured.

There should be a thermometer in their brooder.  The temperature should be 95 degrees for the first week, 90 for the second etc.  You may decrease by 5 degrees for each week of age.  Being huddled in the corner, as you describe, is often an indication that they are a bit too cold.  The lamp should shine on a portion of the brooder, not the entire thing, so that they may move away from the lamp to cool down as needed, then back under the lamp as they need heat.  The lamp remains on, but is raised up a little each week to decrease the temp.  If they are only a week, or two old and ambient temperature is only 82, they're way too cold.

 

Are they in direct sunlight during the day?  It may be too much.

We have a thermometer to check the brooder temp and it has been between 80-90. The brooder is in the garage so during the day the ambient temp gets close to 90 therefore with the heat lamp on it gets quite hot. We lost two very small chicks so I was thinking they got too hot. They would not move away from the heat lamp very often. It is now midnight where I live and I have the heat lamp back on since it has cooled down in the garage some.

Did you misread the recipe or did you follow it and it just tastes off? I've found sometimes you have to wait 24 to 48 hours to get the true taste if it's the latter.

Can you reduce the heat lamp down to 100 W instead of 250? I have a couple bulbs that I can exchange out (250, 100, 75W) depending on the conditions.

 

 

Got up at 0300 and deloused the flock. I am so glad that's out of the way! The chickens aren't so bad to do, just time consuming, it's the bloody turkeys that are large and uncooperative.

We got some dust yesterday to dust the girls with and their coop and nest's.

Baby chicks 15,  I think the whole problem is the garage doesn't keep a stable temperature like a room in your house would.     When it cools down the heat lamp isn't adequate, When it gets hot outside the garage much seem like an inferno - so the heat lamp is much too hot.   Could you move your babies to  your basement or some room that holds a stable temperature.   Your chicks will do so much better under those conditions.

I switched to Frontline spray last year after failing with multiple applications of ivermectin pour on and the poultry dust in their sandbox. It knocked the mites back, but didn't get rid of all of them even when applying every 10 days for 4 applications. With the Frontline the mites are gone within 48 hours. Reapply once after 28 days.  I still add the poultry dust to their sandbox along with stove ashes.  Seems like now that the wild birds are back this spring we got mites again. I have only noticed them on the toms, likely because they don't dustbathe. Last year we got mites thanks to a rogue guinea hen that wanted to join my flock.
