I am glad the ideas for boys was useful.
Getaclue - I was thinking that that was a funny story and hoping it didn't turn out bad and whether I should openly laugh at your being duped.
I have had an incredibly long stretch of bad luck.
A month ago, my oldest sister (64) was on vacation when she had an attack of pancreatitis which was very painful. The hospital gave her morphine which made her BP bottom out. They couldn't get it up and had to put her on a ventilator. Once the BP was stabilized, they airlifted her to UAB hospital in Birmingham. She still can't breathe on her own and has been in MICU on a ventilator ever since.
Two weeks ago, my mother-in-law died. They planned the funeral for that Friday, then changed it to Thursday (my work calendar was free on Friday, full on Thursday.) I had to have clothes and the boys all had to have suits.
Next, the renters called to say the roof of my rental house was leaking buckets. I tried to get five different people to go look at it and give me estimates. I finally got one, just one, that said he would fix it. That cost nearly $1000, too much but I had no choice and no time. That was my chicken show money, put back to go to Knoxville in December.
Then on Sunday, as I was selling $100 worth of chickens to help recoup the money, we got word that two of our son's had been in a wreck down the road. We rushed to the scene to find the truck crushed from flipping and my 16 year old (driver) sitting on the road with a VFD man holding his neck and the other son (front passenger) lying on a backboard in a ditch with another VFD member holding his head, and a third holding his left leg straight. She said he had an open fracture of his ankle and that the ambulance was on the way. I made my own quick assessment of the wound. Noting that there did appear to be a puncture hole in the middle of what looked like ground meat that was his ankle but that there was no significant bleeding to worry about. My baby was talking, although some of it made no sense, and I knew that he could have a head injury, but he was conscious. I rode in the ambulance with the boys, DH followed after taking care of the report and the truck. There was a third boy (friend) in the truck that walked away with only scratches. Several church members were on the scene and had already begun the prayer chain. Prayer works. Once all x-rays were done, there were no broken bones and no stitches needed. There were lots of cuts, bruises, scrapes, and swelling. The youngest has a concussion, and his ankle still has glass in it that will, hopefully, work its way out as it heals. They both went back to school Wednesday morning.
Did I mention that I have had bronchitis for a week?
On Wednesday morning, after I had gotten the boys off to school, I lay down on the couch to "give in" to being sick, It was about 8:30am and a friend called to say that a good friend of my boys had just been killed in a car wreck. I knew the oldest was at work and wouldn't get off till 4:00pm. The youngest was going to a Cross Country meet to support his teammates and wouldn't be home until evening. I took off to the school to be with my middle son. I broke the news to my son and brought him home to grieve with him. Although older, the boy killed was one of his (two) best friends. They went to church together, had several bonfires here at our house, played D&D every Sunday afternoon, and they spent many evenings together on the computer playing games or on Skype (or both.) My son, Jarred, is nearly 6' tall and close to 280lbs, but he was "Little Jarred" The friend was "Big Jared" at 6'3" and about 320lbs. I was told that he was killed instantly. I hope that is true. His vehicle caught on fire and was fully engulfed on the scene. I sent the money from the chicken sale to the family (they struggle financially) in a card and hope they feel it was appropriate. I just thought they would need it more than flowers.
I could add more negative details to each incident. Hard feelings among family, little or no insurance, scheduling screw-ups, physical disabilities, etc. But I don't want any of you to think I am complaining. I am only sharing what has been a very difficult and stressful time in my life. Still I feel blessed. I am so thankful for the good fortune that is with me 90% of the time, but also that which was sprinkled in during this time as well. It is so hard to think that it could have easily been me in that mother's place. I have even had moments when I felt guilty that my boys were so fortunate and their friend was not. Please pray for that family, I can't pretend to understand the pain and loss they are going through.
