Once again I haven't been following along but I hope everyone had a great Christmas.
I know lots of people are having some crazy weather.
I thought it was very strange that my rain gauge has been reading just under 2" every time I emptied it the last couple days till I found out it has a crack at the 2" mark. I figured it had to be more than that cause the whole back of the property is under water and 3 of the chicken yards are more like a pond than forage. I never had that much standing water before. It has been raining hard and steady since Christmas evening. It isn't supposed to stop till late Monday night.
Then I watched the 5 o'clock news. Turns out this is the wettest year on record here. This was the wettest December on record (and it is still coming down). Yesterday was the 3rd highest rain total for a single day in St. Louis history.
There have been lots of drownings on both the IL and MO side of the river the last 2 days.
The Mississippi at St. Louis is supposed to have its second highest crest ever this week at nearly 45 feet, just behind the great flood of 1993.
Area flood gates are being closed now. Some levees on tributaries have been topped. Coast Guard will be closing St. Louis harbor to navigation.
A couple tributaries are cresting just a couple inches shy of their record.
All lanes of Interstate 70 have been closed since this morning and will be till tomorrow afternoon.
