Thanks WVduckchick and Chickadoodles!
The Coops section of BYC really provided a lot of helpful hints. I had looked at a lot of ready-built coops, but didn't like the fact that you'd have to step inside for cleaning or that the entry doors were kind of narrow. That and the price for what you got. My main complaint in the DIY build -- other than I live in a shingle-less zone of the United States...who knew? -- is that it took far longer than anticipated. Far, far longer. I had hatch-along chicks that were, well, pretty much chickens in the back bedroom. That wasn't so bad, but a couple were escape artists who enjoyed their walkabout touring a little too much. I had my grow light setup in the same room and one escapee took out my 2015 pepper crop on one venture from confinement.
Doing it by myself was an exercise in self-reliance and ingenuity. MacGyver lives! Don't underestimate what you can do when left to your own devices. I wish I could say I did it all, but no way could I bend and sit on the ground to put up the undercoop wire mesh barrier... Not without rolling around to move and looking like some broken windup toy. Darn knees! Well, one and done. Glad I don't have to build another.
