Deworming Goats

Quote:
I add DE to the chickens food and the goats food but from what i've read it only works before they get worms. I have 3 adult goats and 2 kids and was looking for a broad spectrum dewormer. not really sure which one to use. My local feed store really only carries dewormers for horses

Horse paste dewormer will work for tapeworms and you will need to get the cattle pour-on and give it orally by weight. With mine I give 1 cc per 10 lbs and then I worm again in 10 days do it again and again in 10 days to break the cycle of worms, as some only get the adult worms and the eggs hatch. This is what I do and some dont agree, but some do and it gets done with teh seasons....Unless I get a enw goat and its wormed when it arrives here and is separate from the others and also treated for cocci also.

I rotate at least 3 wormers over the course of the year. Dosing them every few months and switching the wormers everytime. Keeps the worms from building a resistance. I use Ivomec injectible at 1cc per every 50lbs and give it orally. I also use a pyrantel pamoate. And the latest class I've had to start up with to replace the ineffective safeguard, is a moxidection. You can only use this on bucks, kids and does that are not bred. So you need to time it before breeding or after kidding. It was the only relatively new class of wormer for goats that my vet could recommend that would be fully effective. Even the Ivomec wasn't getting them all. And I've found the pelleted wormers do nothing at all. But if you think you have a worm load and can't explain it after you have tried all the wormers I'd have a fecal done, worm, and then have a fecal done again a couple of weeks later. And DE has not been proven effective for internal parasites since it normally only works when the environment it's in is nice & dry.
