what about real HOT weather

Can you safely raise chickens in really HOT weather if you have the coop in the shade of trees?

Welcome! welcome-byc.gif It's been over 100 degrees here for most of the summer so far and our birds are doing fine. Their run is in the shade and we put a mister in there in the hottest part of the day. Just provide plenty of water for them. This week ours got a new house that they share with the rabbits (half of a converted double car garage). It has an air conditioner in it and we got out in the afternoons and the turkeys are laying under the mister while all of the chickens are in the house with the rabbits. Lol.

Barred rocks, red sex link, silver wyandotte, white leghorns, mottled cochin banty, silkie, blue swedish and khaki campbell ducks, meat rabbits, white holland turkeys, turtles, cats, and as much garden space as one can cram into a small urban yard half given over to the chickens

been miserable here for several weeks. The Chickens are housed under a lot of trees and have a mister and they seem to be doing fine. Not laying a lot but then again I have 3 hens with chicks right now too.

Hia nd welcome-byc.gif

Yes, it's possible. We live in Australia, and the chickens were fine over the big heat wave in 2009, although their water usually did get very hot during the day, even in the shade. You should change their water frequently.
The chickens also enjoy some watermelon when it gets really stuffy. lol.png

I hope you find all the info you need here, and enjoy the site. big_smile.png

Hello and welcome to BYC frow.gif Where I live it goes over 120* frequently in the summer months. Haven't lost a chicken to the heat yet (touch wood). They have shade and lots of water and I also wet their run so they can cool their feet. Watermelon is a great treat and I'm sure your birds would like a fan and or a mister as well. Good luck and enjoy!

Hello from Kansas and welcome-byc.gif!  I agree with the others postings - give them shade and cool fresh water and you should be in good shape.  They can be a pretty resiliant critter!  Best of luck to you!
