Excuse the chicken wire. I didn't want to disturb them.

And just because it's so stinking cute, here is a picture taken only 3 weeks ago. Huge changes taking place.

Oh, yes. I would definitely say rooster. He's gonna be gorgeous. :)

My sweet puppy, Maggie (1yo), 3 adorable baby pet rats, Darby, Lilah, and Faye, 3 cats, 2 bunnies, a goldfish named Ghoti (pronounced "Fish"), 1 Khaki Campbell duckling, 1 Magpie duckling, and lots and lots of chickens!

Here's how you can tell....

Rooster                                            Hen

thick legs                                          feels thin in comparision

huge wattles and comb                    small wattles and comb

grows drooping feathers by tail        smooth transition from back to tail

tail that goes out and curves down  goes upward and doesn't curve

packed spiny neck feathers             soft wide feathers lightly packed

Why do you copy and paste the same thing in every thread? This does not apply for young chicks like the OP is asking about..

But yes. That is a cockerel.

Oh that's ok. All helpful info for a newbie. smile.png

By the way, this is a blue Cochin.... Or would anyone call it splash? If I were to breed him with a blue hen, I'll get all blue chicks, correct?

I don't think he is pure blue. He seems to be a mixture of colours. Blue is normally uniform in colour. There should be no 'splashes' of colour.

However, I don't think he is considered splash either. idunno.gif

I would ask the question on colour under breeds genetics and showing, as it does not relate to the topic at hand. smile.png You'll have more experienced breeders over there help you out.

I copy and paste because it's quicker and people can pick stuff from it that their bird might have. I find with the younger ones it's the thick legs and bigger comb/wattles but I posted all of them to put out a wider range for future references.
