Turkey got his head stuck in the fence.... help please!!! UPDATE FIGURED IT OUT!

My 16 week old Turkey looks to have either gotten his head stuck in the fence or something grabbed him through it. There is no puncture wounds that I can see though there is some blood. His whole head and neck are swollen up, red, and looks to be blood filled. He acts miserable.

I've washed his whole head and neck off with iodine water.

I've heard I can give him aspirin for the pain? Does anyone know how much; I'm guessing he weighs about 8 pounds or so.

I have Tylan 50 or Penicillin~ I would like to give him an antibiotic, I had a different turkey get attacked by a dog last year and he developed gangrene and died IN JUST THREE DAYS! hit.gif So I don't want this one to get an infection. Which one and how much?

Thank you in advance!!!

Well since no one has responded I went ahead and poured a whole bunch of iodine water over his head. I also crushed up 1 aspirin in about 8 cc's of water and gave it to him. I also gave him 1cc of Penicillin and 1.5cc of Tylan. He perked up for a little while but still seemed miserable.

Later that night it looks like the skin on the top of his head is crusting and hard and maybe going to slough off.

If he is still alive this morning I'll re-dose with what I gave him yesterday. I hope he survives. fl.gif

Good luck!  I've only had chickens a year and haven't tried aspirin or anything.  We did have to give our roo some antibiotics for his torn wing awhile back.  I want to say it was tetracycline?  It came in a packet at the feed store.  We separated him into a dog kennel in the coop and gave him his own personal waterer dosed with it.  That helped immensely.  It  sounds like, with the crusting over, all may be healing for your guy.  I'm sure they are like us and take a little while to get completely back to normal!

If he is still alive tomorrow I will get a picture of him.

The other turkeys beat the living snot out of him, literally almost killing him. They are only about 5 months old.

Poor thing!!!!

I've been giving him aspirin, tylan and penicillin. I've also been giving him a watery mash and electrolytes since he isn't eating. Yesterday he was at least up walking around, today he is just laying there I don't know if he will make it.

Well he's up and walking around this morning and his head doesn't look as swollen. His eyes aren't swollen shut as much and almost showed interest in some food. fl.gif
