Stupid, STupid, Stupid

I just got home from band practice. As soon as I got inside I went to let my dog outside when I noticed "it". There was a hawk going right for my R.I.R cockerelsth.gif. As soon as I saw the hawk I figured one of my birds out back was dead already so I went to investigate. Turns out the hawk reached it's head through the welded 2"x4" wire and killed a chicken. Now how does that happen. The chickens could of just got inside the coop which is directly above the entire run or just gone to the other side. This coop is small ( 3'x4' ). I don't understand why chickens are so stupid.

Well They are staying in the  coop right now and I will let them out at like five. I just saw it a few minutes ago and I assume it was wanting the Rhode Islands.

Sorry for you loss.

Sometimes my chicken can surprise we with how intelligent they can be.....other times I am amazed how stupid they can be.

I had a silkie hen keep falling into my fish pond by trying to walk of the water lilly leaves. She did it 3 times in less than a week.  She would always then swim to the deepest end of the pond to to one corner that has a steep side.  She could easily get out anywhere else.  None of my other chickens every fell in the pond in 5 years!  Sadly one day I found her drowned - just inches away from a shallow easy to get out of part.
