Are the production reds just Rhode Island Red and New Hampshire Red crosses? What are cherry eggers?

Basically yes.

 

Production Reds and Cherry Eggers both.

 

Different hatcheries have different formulas to produce them.

 

Cackle advertises theirs as New Hampshire roosters over Rhode Island Red hens.

And.... if someone, generations ago, has mixed in Leghorn to increase egg production, which is highly likely, it isn't mentioned.

"Production Reds" and "Cherry Eggers" can be anything the breeder or seller says they are. Neither name has a widely accepted definition. I've seen them applied to RIR/NH crosses, red sex-links. straight New Hampshires, and chickens of unknown provenance that happened to be more or less red in color.

You'll need to ask the breeder exactly what their ancestry is. If the person selling them did not breed them they may not precisely know either.

well, actually I was hoping to breed them and didn't want to sell them as some thing they weren't. Very helpful though, thanks.

I agree with the other posts. They are originally a cross between a Rhode Island Red and New Hampshire Red. I have read that also there may be some brown leghorn mixed in. I have both Production Reds and Heritage Reds. Their coloring is similar to a Rhode Island but is not as consistent as they vary from dark to light. Production Reds are good producers of large brown eggs.
