Setting eggs August 2 -- anyone else? - Page 2

I set 26 silkie eggs today.

You'll love the Speckled Sussex.  Mine are very friendly and love to follow me around the yard and help me weed the garden.  Good luck everyone.

On my way home from work tonight I stopped and picked up some eggs. Thanks to Cloverleaf for connecting me with one of my own neighbors who is a chicken addict too. He lives super close and it turns out I actually bought one of my chickens from his wife at the Spring Swap. He gave me 13 eggs, I wanted a mix of breeds so my friend could pick out three different breeds and he sure delivered! Plus I got to pick his brain =)

4- BBS Ameraucana

3- Blue Orpington

3- Salmon Faverolles (LF)

1- Blue Jersey Giant

1- unmarked surprise egg (I think it is another Salmon Faverolle)

1- unmarked total surprise..doesn't look like any of the other eggs and he couldn't remember who he got it from. I LOVE surprises!

I tossed in one Buttercup/Lemon Cuckoo Orpington cross egg just for fun.

Plus the Speckled Sussex... 22. One was cracked and I waxed it..so probably no good, but worth a shot.

36 eggs total!

What do you think of that list of choices Summer???

Deanna, I am very excited about all the choices! I may just have to break my 3 chicken rule! Now I wish I lived in an area that doesn't have restrictions! I will just have to live vicariously through you all in the hatching process. big_smile.png

Just like I planned to not do ever again, I ended up setting these eggs over a 36 hour period. (The empty space bugged me, so I added a mystery mutt there.) The light pinkish-brown eggs are my mutts, dark brown are BCMs, light blues are CLB (seller has 4 separate pens and kindly marked the eggs), large medium brown ones are Wheaten Marans -- those arrived today. So, all set! Not going to candle the buggers to death!

Let the chicken math begin!

There are only 4 Faverolle eggs...but if they hatch we will be able to sex the chicks pretty quickly after they start to feather out. That way we can make sure you get a pullet.

ooh! I hope im not too late! I set 6 buff orpington eggs yesterday- not very many compared to you guys! They are all from the same parents, henrietta and Mr. Feathers, my breeding pair that I got at an auction last year. Henrietta just got done brooding 3 baby chicks when I put her in with the rooster, and she wasn't very used to being around other chickens, so I am crossing my fingers that the eggs are fertile! Hope to see some progress soon, and im looking forward to seeing how you guys's hatches turn out! :)

So far, I'm keeping the candling flashlight away from the incubator, so I don't overdo it. My last hatch was mostly shipped eggs and I'm fairly sure I overhandled them. I had about 48 to start and ended up with sixteen hatched. 4 out of 5 of my own hens' eggs made it, so I'm sure being shipped didn't help either.

How are you guys doing? Staying patient? Candling or not?

I plan on my first candling and weighing this Friday.  I have my humidity set at 48% and temp at 99.6.  I'll make adjustments Friday if weight loss isn't where it's supposed to be.
