why would a bird stop laying?

Thread Starter

We have a bird who is at least a year and a half to almost two years old, and she no longer lays eggs for 4-5 months. I was wondering if she could have a parasite that did this or some disease that caused this problem? She still eats and pecks around. Appears to be happy doing her little thing. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Sometimes you're the pigeon,
sometimes you're the statue.
Q: Why did the chicken cross the road?
A: For some fowl reason!

What breed is she?  You are certain of her age?

If she's not molting, and you're not having extremes in weather, then I'd look at breed (some are known for laying sparingly) or the possibility of mites/lice.  Of course there's also the possibility of disease of her egg tract organs - but if she's laying on and off, then I wouldn't really think that - only if she's stopped totally.

Caretaker of a lovely mixed flock including: australorp, plymouth rocks, wyandotte, d'uccles, silkies, EEs, andalusian, and a few seramas, plus a golden retriever, great dane, and three cats.
