One of my Ladies wants to be a Mom! But I have questions

Hello there All! I need some advice please. One of my Ladies has decided that she wants to build herself a nest, hidden away from the outdoor coop/run area. A few of my other Ladies are laying outdoors, those eggs I do collect. The indoor nest I have left alone. Anyway, today I counted 11 eggs, and I could tell that she'd rearranged the eggs a bit and scattered some straw over. This area is atop concrete floor in my barn and all ducks have ability to enter the area, they just seem to prefer the outdoors and always range during the day. My Older Ladies both have been walking around with ruffled feathers for few days, but theyre such a group that i just cant imagine any of my ducks not always being with the group! My first question, if a Pekin, Rouen or Khaki should decide to go broody, will she just choose not to join the group and stay indoors on the nest when the others leave? Do I need to do anything in terms of maintenance/cleaning? I did notice the eggs are definitely wet, and I observed a few flies swarming the area (Yikes!) but no odors. So is that part normal or do I have a dirty place? Also, I'm having trouble finding egg identification pics on google, is anyone willing to share some here? I will say I do know which ones are Pekins smile.png but I'm unsure of which could be Khaki Campbells or Rouens. Also is It common for a Mama Duck to hatch out a nest this late in the summer?

Sorry if these are odd or redundant questions, I'm still new at this. Oh yes. We have 2 drakes, and lots of activity there, so I'm sure they are fertile.I Iearn so much from the wisdom on this site and i deeply appreciate any and all thoughts. Thanks so much! smile.png

I am unable to answer most of these questions as I just now have ducks that are starting to lay, so I'm going to bump this up so the more experienced can help you.

If they are anything like chickens, then yes - she will stay on the nest and not join the others in playing outdoors.  She might venture out to eat a bit, drink, and poo, but that's about it. And as for the flies - they are just horribly bad this time of year! I can have them flying around just minutes after completely cleaning out the coop. Just keep a nose out for smells - maybe hang a fly trap near there to attract them and catch them. I have two in my run as we speak. Pictures will also help in determining the breed  :)

Mommy to BR (Onyx), 2 Delaware (Pearl & Opal), BO (Ruby), Blue Silkie (Amber), Splash Silkie (Raine), 2 Golden Laced Orps (Goldie & Lacey), 2 EE (Bunny & Rabbit) & 2 Blk Javas (Crow & Butterfly)!

Also a Pit/Mastiff mix, an American Bulldog, 1 cat, a guinea pig, a bearded dragon, and a koi pond.

Oh.. can't forget my daughter, granddaughter, step-son, and wonderful husband!

Based on my experience with runners, yes.

Usually ducks keep the nest pretty clean, but things can happen.
What do you mean the eggs are wet?  Did an egg break?  See if you can discourage the flies from cleaning up near the nest, putting some chopped straw or sawdust over whatever is there now, something.  You don't want fly strike.

I have a broody runner right now, and one went broody in late autumn last year.

Nine beautiful Runners, four beautiful Buffs, thousands of beautiful memories and counting.

Looking for ducks?  Please consider adopting rescued ducks.  There are many places and people who do rescues, but we are not allowed to post the links due to BYC regs.  So fire up your web browsers and find some sweet, grateful duckies.

Thank you, I've been trying to post a pic I took yesterday of her nest but having technical difficulties. She really changed things yesterday, it was built up quite tall and she is turning the eggs. She seems to come out toward the evening time, but she is sitting on the nest.

Yes the eggs were quite wet. I did not notice any broken eggs. Perhaps the moisture was just from Mama Duck? I had never heard of fly strike before yesterday. Thanks for the info and I will keep an eye out for that. Should i pick up the eggs to inspect more closely? Will be replacing my fly strip today as well. And of course I will be back if I get more questions!!!

Thanks.

Hello Again. Today is Day 32 for the nest, and guess what? I found one single egg, which has the large cracking area, and a very live duckling inside! smile.png it is moving around and making noise! I'm super excited to see what happens but I'm leaving Mama Duck and her nest alone during this time. But I need some advice, please.

When and if this duckling ever hatches, when should I move it to a brooder, or should I leave it with Mama and try to build a corrall of sorts to separate them from the others? My gut tells me I should move it to a separate brooder area, where the other adult ducks will not trample it. Also, another duck of mine seems to be laying her eggs in the nest as well, and so I think it would be best if I deny her access to the area. I have another (unknown) duck laying but not sitting and a Khaki Campbell on about day 15 of sitting. I could just drop the gate to hold the two sitting females in, but then the unknown layer will not have access. It's getting toward Fall here and I'm not really thrilled with the idea of bringing little ones indoors.... So perhaps I should just go ahead and cull the youngest nest. This is such an exciting event for me! Im just not exactly sure what to do now....

Oh, one more thing: there seem to be at least 3 more eggs that appeared at the same stage of development when I tried to candle last week. After this one hatches and dries, should I move the other eggs to my Khaki's nest if they look like they may still hatch, or leave them with their mother, if she will continue to sit, or should I just cull what remains?

Any and all advice/thoughts are appreciated! The contributors on this site are the best! smile.png

Me again. I've decided to drop the door and keep all adults out except the 2 sitting Moms.

Is it normal for a Pekin to roll an egg And away from The nest for the actual hatch? The egg Shell remaining is drying out a lot and is nearly slit open halfway. Feathers are visible in spots only.

Anyone? Please & Thank you
