HELP!! 18 "Tyson" chicks on the way!

Hi- I'm new to the forum but I have an unusual question! I have a variety of 16 different chickens from McMurray Hatchery that we raise in our backyard. I have a friend who is a graduate student at a local university and was given 18 eggs from the Tyson company for her doctorate research. She is finished with her research and needs a home for the chicks. I offered to take them before I knew they were from Tyson. My question is can I raise them with my other chickens. I have read that they grow so fast that they will have health problems! Any advice or information would be appreciated! Thanks!

Since they are meat birds, I would do one of three things, not name them and eat them later (I actually wouldn't be able to do that, but you might?), sale them as meat birds (or just sale them) on craigslist, or try to integrate them in your flock one at a time when they are bigger if you have enough room for them.

Besides that, could we get some pics?pop.gif

How old are these birds?

Are you able to butcher them? If yes, prepare for meaties and chicken dinners. If not, I would tell your friend you regretfully decline to take the birds and let her dispose of them herself. Researchers can dispose of "used" subjects easily, or should be able to as part of their research plan.

Well, the kittens aren't so cute anymore and the easter egger cockerels are in the freezer. Plus, I think offering them as "prizes" scared folks off! So, I'm still posting quotes, if you know it let me know. I'm very enamored of this new one, it may hang around for a while!

You can raise them with your other chickens. The key to keeping them from having health problems is to limit their feed intake and force them to forage during the day. Cornish Crosses are pretty cute once all their feathers grow in and they waddle like ducks. lau.gif  And while they won't be good layers, they will make a tasty dinner!
