Why am I not getting very many eggs?

Thread Starter

Can some one tell me why I have 21 chickens and am only getting 5 eggs a day? I have a couple older hens but most are 1-2 years old. I know that no one is eatting the eggs but I ocasionaly do find a broken egg (maybe once a month) but no one eats it. It is really starting to get irriateing as they are just eatting and eatting and not laying any eggs. Please help me I need to figure out what the problem is.

Thanks

Well, there could be several reasons.

1.  Temperature.  When it's too hot or too cold your chickens won't lay as much.

2.  Breed of chicken.  A lot of chickens don't lay more than 2-3 eggs a week.

3.  Age.  Most chickens decrease their laying by 40% after age 2. Somebody can correct me, but I believe that after age 3, egg production drops another 20%.

4.  Parasites -- internal or external can stop laying.

5.  Molting.  Chickens take 6 weeks to molt and usually do it at 1 1/2 to 2 years old.  During molt, they don't lay.

6.  Weird environmental change -- chickens stop laying with that.

7.  Sickness/disease.

8.  Poor nutrition/diet.

There are other reasons, but those come to mind.
