Got six of our planned nine chicks this afternoon and Oh my gosh, I can't stop watching them! I wish they were in my living room so I could just watch them all the time! They are all day old babies and we got:

An Ameracauna- who has been named Nutmeg

An Orpington- Henrietta

A Dorking- who might be Harriet (not 100% decided yet)

A Cuckoo Maran- who is so far without a name

A Gold Laced Wyandotte- Frangelica

And a little chick I can't recall the breed of who is a " ____ Blue", looks like a penguin, is half the size of the other girls and whom my three year old daughter named Clementine.

:)

See avatar for pictures!

Ohh, we got day old chicks from the Urban Farm Store here in Portland. We don't hatch our own. We're newbies to this whole chicken thing. :)

We're getting three more next week, and I think they will be an Australorpe. a Silver laced Wyandotte, and a Rhode Island Red. The owner also said he will try to see if he can get me a blue laced red wynadotte. Eeeek!

And we can't have them in the house because we have two dogs and a three year old. I think even one of the dogs and our daughter would be okay with them, but our other dog is an 18 month old Australian Shepherd and she is way too crazy to handle them this young. We're waiting to introduce her for a few weeks until they are bigger just in case.I feel like they would die if she just breathed on them right now!

Just be careful-- we just got new chicks over the summer as well-- and we love our chickens and we love our dogs-- and our beloved schnauzer has turned into a terrible chicken predator and has through various mishaps (brooder accident, chicks squeezing out through the fencing, door left open to their run) has eaten 3 of our biggest chicks so far.... I just requires constant vigilance if you turn out having a non chicken compatible dog....But good luck and have fun..they are great little creatures...

Yeah, we're introducing them very VERY slowly as the chickens grow. We let them one at a time on the leash into the garage where the brooder is today and let them look in the top and see the chicks (it's on the floor). Takoda, the older blue heeler was great and just cautiously smelled them, We made him lay down, and opened one door to the brooder so he could get a closer look and he was interested but really calm and curious so we took one out(the biggest and most friendly one) and I held it while my husband held his harness and let them meet. The chick cheeped quietly and pecked his nose and he wagged his tail like crazy. Haha! I expected him to do really well as we've had him around babies, kittens, puppies, birds, etc and he has always been great. We brought our Aussie (Juno) in and at first she just stood over the brooder watching them, and then she started wagging her butt like crazy and whining like she does when she wants to play with other pups while walking or whatever. We held her back and just let her smell them and whine, but didn't let her closer and didn't open the brooder or take them out.  She got a bit more anxious to play with them so we told her to be easy, and made her sit down. She calmed down a bit, but not nearly enough to let her meet one face to face, so we praised her and then took her out of the garage.

Overall, it went better than expected, especially for Takoda. We are planning on repeating this once a day until we put them in the coop, and eventually we'll let Juno get a closer looks when she can be more calm about it. We are building the coop and run SUPER secure so there is no way that they could get in there, and the our backyard is fenced in two sections, and the part of the backyard that the coop is going in can be shut denying access to the dogs.

We also have one outdoor(by his own choice, we don't force him to stay out) cat who I am pretty sure would eat them if he got the chance, so we are keeping the garage doors latched at all times unless we're out there giving them sunlight and fresh air, which is a few times a day.

Thanks for your reply! :)

Ok, just wanted to share my experience, also it is hard to tell if "playing" is hunting sometimes, but it sounds like you are being super careful..... Our old boxer who is blind in one eye and has her Canine Good Citizenship certificate surprised us by taking a slow motion flying leap at the free ranging birds in the back yard... SO now that back door is always shut.....
