New babies!!!!!

I am so excited! We just went and picked out our two new baby goats today! They're Nigerian Dwarf wethers and are so adorable! They are staying with mama until the end of Sept. but we have our deposit down on them.

We've never had goats before so this is going to be a fun new adventure for my family and I. 

 

Here's some pics for anyone who enjoys them!

 

Baby #1 is black, brown and white.

We are thinking Blitz for the black and white one but that's not set in stone yet. No ideas for the other one. Any suggestions? I love hearing other peoples ideas for names.

We have two ND bucks named Will and the other is Ben/Caleb. 

 

Oh yea I like Blitz :)

Aww, I love the names, they are adorable! I'm very excited to bring these little guys home, I can't wait! A month feels like forever!! I see you have several goats, anything you think is important for a 1st time goat owner to know? 

 

I also see that you have Great Pyr's and an Anatolian Shepherd. Which breed do you think is all around better at keeping all your critters (both human and animal) safe from everything both human and animal? I'm a big dog person with lots of dog experience but have never owned a breed like either of these. I grew up with German Shepherds and Rotties, my parents trained and showed them and I've been training dogs since I was 10yrs old. In my adult life my husband and I have had GSD's and American Pit Bull Terriers. Pitties (while they are great family dogs) aren't really into pleasing you as much as they are into pleasing themselves and if you happen to like what they are doing, all the better. I am interested in a breed specifically for guarding our critters and us from anything unwelcome on our 9 acres. We have bobcats, neighbor dogs who have killed chickens and bitten our kids and shady looking characters who work at a shop near by, I would love a dog who's sole purpose is to keep all those things at bay. Our pittie just wants to lick every person she meets and play with every dog she sees. lau.gif    barnie.gif

Well before you bring them home make shore that you have a place to put them, feed, water, hay, buckets,etc. and you will need to learn how to trim the hooves and worm them.

 

As for the LGD

 

Our Anatolian Shepherd was growling at things that should not be in the field at 9 weeks and at 4 months she barking and growling at anything strange. Our Pyr on the other hand did not start really barking at strangers till 8 months. But keep in mind that they HAVE to have a fenced area. Also is they are with you chickens you are going to lose some.

LOVE Blitz for either gender

 

The other could be

 

Girl: Blossom or Bonnie

Boy: Benny or Billy

Either: Bambi or Basil

here is a list I found on BYH:

 

 

Basics
•    Shelter – they need protection from predators and inclement weather
•    Fencing – it needs to keep them in and predators out (remember they are escape artists!)
•    Bedding Material – pine shavings seem to be a good option here
•    Collars – easy to clip on and off because you only want the collar on when using the leash
•    Leashes – more than one if you’re getting multiple goats
Feeding and Watering
•    Food Dishes – one for each goat so you can monitor how much each is getting
•    Hay – preferably the same type of hay they were eating at their previous home 
•    Hanging Scale – to measure how much hay you’re giving them
•    Goat Food – again preferably what they were previously eating, at least to start
•    Measuring Cup – to measure how much feed they’re getting
•    Black Sunflower Seeds – added to the goat food to provide vitamin E
•    Goat Mineral –  Mana Pro minerals
•    Salt 
•    Baking Soda – to offer free choice
•    Calf Mana – top dressing for goat food
•    Goat Treats – to help get things moving in the right direction
•    Watering Bucket – the Fortiflex brand seems indestructible
Beauty Supplies
•    Hoof Trimmer
•    Clippers with blades for face and body
•    Grooming Brush
•    Goat Weight Tape – to measure how much they weigh
Health Supplies
•    Alcohol
•    Cotton Swabs
•    Goat Nutri-Drench
•    Rectal Thermometer
•    Pepto Bismal/Milk of Magnesia
•    Vegetable Oil
•    Baby Aspirin
•    Phone Number of Recommended Goat Vet (that will visit farm)
