Hello from Western New York!

Hello everyone! I've been visiting the BackYardChickens.com site for years after reading an article in a magazine that recommended it. I chose to join now because I've been working on planning my "dream home" and subsequent "dream homestead". =) Even though building our home is still almost 10 years away, my boyfriend and I have already begun to plan and save our pennies.

I hope to raise free range chickens for eggs (enough to feed a family of six, with a few extra to share with friends and neighbors), 3 to 5 turkeys for meat, a Guernsey cow for milk and perhaps a goat because I've heard they're very good at keeping other animals company.

So glad to be here!

Hello and welcome to BYC frow.gif I like your future plans! Sounds lovely. You can keep a goat or 2 for milk as well. Goat's milk is great. And they need less space and chow than a cow...

I don't care much for the flavor of goat's milk or cheese, but I did think about making small batches of soap with it. Makes your skin very very soft!

Well thank you very much! =) We know we're facing a tough road ahead with the economy and with myself taking several more years to finish graduate work, so we're trying to figure out as much as we can as soon as we can so we're in a very good place when the time comes. I'm really looking forward to getting into the nitty-gritty detail oriented information about raising chickens and other animals. I get a lot of really great general information from my dad as he grew up on a working farm, but he's much more versed in cattle and swine than poultry haha
