I have a hearing at City Hall in 2 days to plead my case in front of the commissioners.

I want all of you to pull out ANYTHING that someone might say about chickens that is negative so I can have a response ready. I want sources to back it up as well. I have several already but I need more - especially anything about rats, because for some reason the neighbor is convinced that my chickens made rats magically appear.

I am tired, just started a new job which makes me get up at 5am, and have about a billion things I need to do. I am calling on you guys for help, because a hundred heads are better than one exhausted one!

Thanks in advance, and I welcome discussion - especially if you have heard WEIRD things that people think about chickens. I don't want to have a single question that I am unprepared for. Do your worst... or best. :)

Thank you!

I'm sure these will fall into what's commonly said but thought I'd get this thread moving with a response.

dirty

smelly

noisy

farm animals don't belong in the city

attract flies

attract rodents

attract racoons, etc

coop not aesthetically pleasing

chickens not aesthetically pleasing

chickens carry disease (ie bird flu)

pests chickens attract carry disease

Hope this is even somewhat helpful.

Good luck and keep us posted!

That's great, thanks!

I need your help, people - anything would be good. I have to write a speech!

Talking points: I have had them for well over a year and he is just now complaining. This points to the fact that he only just recently noticed them by seeing them through the fence and then making wild, untrue complaints that they are bothering him.

Good luck at your meeting. I unfortunately will not be able to attend, but here are some other things to think about:

Property Value decreasing; this has never been proven and has in fact been proven to be the opposite. You can show the top cities which college graduates want to move to all allow chickens.

A great site to answer a lot of questions brought up can be found here: http://sarasotacluck.blogspot.com/2010/12/cluck-responds-to-chicken-objections.html

It has pretty much every objection to chickens and the answers given.

I hope all went well fl.gif

Thanks for the well wishes. Unfortunately they voted against me, 3 were on my side, 1 against, and 1 on the fence but he finally sided with 'against' because my neighbor brought up health concerns. He said his wife is immuno-supressed because of her lymphoma and he thinks she is going to get histoplasmosis because I have chickens.

That claim is total bullhockey but I have contacted a lawyer and am going to be challenging the board. I will also be working towards bringing in a new chicken ordinance that will allow a small number of hens.

I would really like if members of the Chickens for Deltona movement would help me in designing this ordinance for Debary. I would like to work closely with you in order to bring chicken ordinances to our fair sister cities.

Thank you.

That's unfortunate. I will help out in whatever way I can. The lawyer is going to have a field day with this situation. The board voted against something that is not defined, has no prohibition and is not in any way a violation of code.

I moved my chickens today from my house over to a good friend's farm. They seem to be settling in quite well. They will be there while I sort out litigation. I have a good lawyer who is very well-versed in code enforcement - so we will see what develops.

I will also be building a privacy fence within the next month or so, since my creepy neighbor is looking into my backyard (he stated himself he never heard them, only saw them.) and it makes me uncomfortable, so I'll be fencing in the whole backyard with a 6-foot privacy fence.

I will update when next I speak with my lawyer.

thank you for all your support!
