Yeah... me too. We never planned to get a duck, but my father in law picked 2 when he went to get the chickens. We took one cause Noah thought it was cute. We went from just having a few chickens to having a pair of ducks (when ours turned out to be a boy)... and now they have their own yard and coop. Thankfully things are all working out now and the drake not chasing the chicken hens anymore. It was a bit of effort, expense and lots of learning to take care of them. Once I accepted him from my father in law I was responsible for him and did what I needed to do to provide for him and his needs.

 

 

Quick question.... those of you that have/have had BO's... when did they start laying? Mine is just over 30 weeks if they were actually 8 weeks when we got them... her comb is just starting to get points on it... no signs of wanting to lay yet

I have three and they started laying around 5&1/2 months.  Hope this helps.

Hello everyone it sure was a beautiful day today.  Anyone raise Polish chickens I have 6 that are 3 months old they all stick together and run around like they are crazy do they ever settle down?

I fed the other chickens some scraps of squash that I baked it is funny to see them eat then rub theirt beaks on the ground like they were wiping their faces.

Lots of putzing around the yard today. Coop cleaned. Chicken run extended by 200 square feet. Dog area cleaned and raked.  And then  there was the nutty professor episode...

Oh, you guys saw that too? I was so mad when I saw that add. I kept trying to figure out how I could get them. I may not have kept them, but you can bet I would not have dumped them either!

Raz must be a prepper. I picked up three plastic barrels myself yesterday to convert to rain barrels and a compost tumbler. I hope to get on the coop soon. So much to do!

OK, what is a "prepper"? 

 

I made this portable rain barrel because the local ordinance officer told me that I can't have rain barrels. The other big round things on the porch are flower pots.  

I wish I had the time, energy, and mostly money to build one of those tilapia set ups... Oh, and I'd like to not be allergic to rabbits...

A "prepper" is someone who is becoming more self-sufficient to protect his or her family from disaster--economic downturn, natural disaster, zombie apocalypse, the usual stuff. We used to call it common sense, our grandparents understood it. Anyway, if you're into gardening, canning, chickens, and everything else that a homesteader would do, you'd be considered a prepper.
