My pullets reached 6months this month, and I'm waiting for the egg, My pullet who is a White Rock, has been acting strange today well all my pullets are, Shes digging alot kicking the hay around and the dirt, Her face is red and her comb has grown out, a long with her waddles, she seems to be making a good bit of noise today. does this mean she is fixing to lay her first egg?? How can I know when shes fixing to lay her first?

This picture was taken a few days ago, her face seems more red today,

She looks ready! My leghorn was acting the same way, two days before she laid her first egg, she sat in the nesting box, fluffed it up, made lots of noise, in then there was the egg!! It was like looking at my first pregnancy test!! lol  I was so excited, ran out screaming and clucking like a chicken! ;)

Should I be expectin it today???? X3 I hope so<3 It'd be like awesome ~ Finally get what I been waitin for 6 months x3 since we have so many eggs from the store wonder if parents would let her lay on it.

Do you have any golf balls or plastic eggs around? Put them in the nesting box and put her in them, maybe that will help her out some. I did that so she would have an idea, but sometimes I would find the balls or eggs scattered on the floor! That also helps them not pecking at them to if you find yourself gone throughout the day, not being there in time to get them. Some people have a problem with their chickens wanting to peck at their eggs. ;) Hopefully tomorrow you will have an egg!!! :D

I do not have a golf but I do have tons of easter eggs xD but we are going to have to make a new nest box, old one is falling appart D: gonna need major help pronto DX Other then the digging around alot and lots of odd noises, what else do I need to look for when she is getting ready to lay??

I reckon she is getting ready to lay, Either Tonight or Tomorrow! She is making that noise because she wants to find a Nest and she cant just leave her too it and she will. Shes probaly going more red because the egg is getting closer to being layed, My chicken made alot of noise and she layed about 1 hour later. She might lay outside or inside the coop if you Free range them, But if you dont Free range them she will hopefully lay inside the sleeping hutch, Its completly normal if she does lay outside the hutch!
Goodluck with your first egg,

(If im too late at replying and she already has layed then tell me, LOL;)
Hope this helps you,

I put fake eggs in the next boxes a few weeks ago for my 5 month old welsummers. I was getting one or two eggs a days on the ground. The nest eggs worked. I'm up to 6 or 7 eggs a day now. I ordered them from Murray Mcmurray.

No eggs yet! Hoping for tomorrow, I was thinking my Barred Rock would lay first but her comb and waddles have not fully come in yet, shes alot bigger, my White Rock has larger comb and waddles, both their faces are red to, but White rock who's name is Angel or the white one, is digging about throwing straw EVERYWHERE! Quite entertainingly cute<3 talking a lot. When she does the egg song does she do that right when the egg comes out or sometime before it does??? Still so new to this~ I think once I see the egg I'ma run in like its Christmas morning!!!! Can not wait! And when will a hen go broody?

You will know when shes gone broody because she just sits in the sleeping hutch for ages and she may lay a egg and stay on it for ages because she wants a baby but she cannot....
Also she will make noise before she lays too either find a nest or theres a predator and shes scaring it off just to make sure...
