HUMANURE COMPOSTING

Ok. I have really flipped or I am inventive.

I have been aching to try this.

I know (as my DW tells me) I make alot of "waste" every year. How can I benefit from this disaster??

Humanure composting comes into mind. Also does a compost toilet.

Now before all the nay-sayers come out,I will only do this for MY bathroom in the back of the house behind the washer and dryer room. The front bathroom will be for my family (prudes).I also have a vent fan, just in case there is smell ( the humanure handbook sez "if properly done, there will be no smell).

I have enough room at the rear of the property, and no others live next to us because thats a main road on the left side.Perfect spot.

The yard has plenty of composting materials as " cover materials" from the chickens, leaves, and grasses.

I now need input.

what do you say nay-sayers????

So you better come home quickly,And you better hide very soon,Or the Bunyip’s going to get you....

google "composting toilets" . If you are going to do it might as well do it the easy way.

I haven't actually done it myself, but I've heard of people doing it.  They "say" that if you do it right, there's little to no smell.  Just get a bucket, go, put some brown on top and repeat until bucket is full....then dump bucket and start over.  The only problem I see is this....until I wean myself completely from the "grocery store" meats and such that are full of the chemicals, antibiotics, steriods and such I probably won't do it.....don't want to be putting any more of those toxins back in the dirt, hoping the sewage system is filtering at least some of that stuff out (though I don't see how seeing as how it's just going into the drainfield).....

PS....glad to see you around!!!

Well bacteria in a compost bin has no place to go cept get eaten by compost critters like bugs and woyms.blood and sickness doesnt proliferate in the open air in a heated compost bin. Some bins get pretty steamy and that will kill off any bad guys in there.

Then when the bin gets tip-top full, cover it with cover materials and wait a year to use.while this wait time, make a new poop-bin.

It's not the bacteria I'm worried about....it's the unnatural chemicals they're putting in the foods I'm eating and feeding the animals they sell (antibiotics, steriods, etc.).  Until I can grow and/or hunt all my own meats (just got started with the meat rabbits) I won't be "humanuring". I don't want all those nasty chemicals going into the fruits and vegies I'm growing.

We are going to have compost toilets in my new home, it took a bit of convencing my DH, he thought i was nuts but i have lots of land and can use this compost as fill and fertilizer too, plus we will not need a hudge septic system just one for the sink and bath because we will be draining the washer into an area we have elephant ears and cannas growing.

They are recycling the sewer water in Southern Cal and claim it is potable when done.

What concerns me about human compost is the medications that we take and crap out, not to mention the chemicals and other stuff going into the garden.  Maybe if you use just your own it would be OK.

Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton agreed on little publicly, but they did agree that when the public treasury becomes a public trough and the voters recognize that, they will send to government only those who promise them a bigger piece of the pie

I'm a yeasayer. We've been using our composting toilet (a Nature's Head) for two years.

When I go camping I often find those compost out houses that you can use. No smell in any of them.

Good for you! I've recently resumed doing this.

And for the people worried about chemicals in the food they eat and medications getting into they plants they grow -- you put those things in your body, but you're worried about what's left in your waste that will be composted and then added to the soil????? If you're worried about that, you should definitely not be putting those things in your body in the first place.

The Humanure Handbook is the definitive guide.
