Buff Orpington Breeder

Hi,

I have had Buff Orpingtons for about a year and a half now. I love this breed and I really want to make my flock better. I really need some help when it comes to breeding. I would like to have some tips on the characters I am breeding for. I want to breed for a bird that has good production but can still place in a show. I know how to breed for production but I really need to tips on coloring, shape, etc,.

Get a copy of the SOP (Standards of perfection) and then start your learning process with Poultry Genetics 101.

You cannot do without a Standard, but in order to help you interpret how the descriptions look on traits on live birds, you really need to have experienced breeders and judges show you. Enter your birds in shows. Your placings will help you to determine how closely your birds live up to the Standard, and you will meet breeders and judges there who will help you too.
