East San Jose is good! Thats where we are, its mostly unincorperated and have a larger amount of chickens legal. Technicaly this is east foothills, but there is a lot of larger properties, when we bought this one there was a coop from the previous owners ( mind you it was 20 years old...) I think it is 6 birds in town, but i know some peopel have more, all depends on the neighbors.
There is a fair bit of Urban chickens here. Its easier where there are houses, say Mountian View or Cupertino, but those areas are a lot more pricy, too.
If you are in town there is no roosters allowed, and they take noise complaints seriously, so if you have one it needs to be quiet. Make sure you look into commutes, too, the freeways around here can get nasty and you don't want to have to travel on the wrong one to get to work.
90% of the rentals are going to be on craigs list for the whole silly valley. Might even post a wanted ad there and see what you can see. fair warning however, there is a housing shortage here so its tough to find places. Not as bad as SF, but can take a few months to find something.
