Help Please! RED MITES

Check out the thread on applying Revolution to your chickens I bet it would work for mites as well (we had bedbugs one year until I covered every pet we owned with Frontline -- no bedbugs anymore)....Revolution is similar and this thread had speciifc doseages for chickens...

The treatments only kill bugs not eggs so I would repeat cleaning the coop and dusting the birds again 7-10 days after the first and then check them and possibly do it a third time to be safe. That way you can get the new ones that have now hatched. Nasty little bugs.

Once everything is under control I would recommend using DE in your coop and dust bath for regular preventative maintenance. Works great.

Hi iv got a bad red mite problem and my coop need to painted and wonder if I use creosote ( lots of) would this help kill them and would it affect the hens/eggs ??
Many thanks for any help :D

We have just found mites on our hens. They seem to of come from no where. We have never had them before. We have cleaned out the entire shed with jeyes fluid and have powdered the birds. The birds were powdered yesterday and the shed was sprayed with jeyes fluid earlier today but when a white bag was put in the shed there were mites on it. How does this happen and how long does it take to get rid of them?

Hi Bristolegg

Nice to come across someone on the same piece of land. Am in West Yorkshire nr Leeds!
Hows your coop? Just wondering if the jeyes worked? I use poultry shield every week and DE everywhere!
If you mix the DE into a paste and smear it under the perch at bedtime, this is soppose to help but of course it drys out.
Ive a broody sat on floor at night.........they aren't broody are they??
Also l use Indorex/acclaim spray that you use for the house to kill flea, eggs and larvae as l was told this works also...but if you spray it wear mask and leave the coop at least 2-3 hrs ventilated as it says toxic to birds. It helps! Think the only thing for thoes red little buggars is creosote! !!!

I live in East Yorkshire UK I had a bad case of mites last year. Cleaned the coop every 3-4 days with dilute jeyes fluid for a couple of weeks and now always use plenty of DE in the coop and mixed in with shavings on the floor of the coop as I have a few birds who always sleep on the floor instead of perches.
There are a lot of rabbits on the land where I live as it is all farmland and have been told the mites are probably spread by them. Since using DE I have not had any more bad experiences with mites.
