sad morning

I lost 2 of my jersey giant chicks this morning.  There was a cold snap and it got colder than I had heard it was going to.  It was only 66 at 715 this morning.  I think they just got smothered.  sad.png

I decided to move them into the garage until they are a 3-4 weeks old at least.

I'm also having problems with our landlord's cows (that were brought back to the property last week).  They are jumping over the 4' fencing I put up in the pasture for my birds (chickens, ducks, geese) and they have busted through the fence info the bird's yard.  There was a 2' H X 2.5' W door for the birds and the cows busted right through there.  I'm concerned that they would bust into where the chicks were being kept to get to their feed.  Stupid cows!!

I'm looking into electric fencing to keep the stupid things in the 10 acres that they have available and out of the 1/2-3/4 acre that I fenced.

DOGS: 4 Shih Tzu, 1 Papillon, 1 Great Pyrenees

CHICKENS: 1 BO, 2 EE, 2 WLH, 10 blue and splash JG, plus various aged JG, BO, JG/BO and JG/EE chicks, and 8 meaties.

DUCKS: 20 Muscovy ducks: 5 adults, 7 juveniles and 8 ducklings.  6 Pekin ducklings

I'm sorry for your loss.sad.png

I use a lamp in the house until mostly feathered. My 3 babies are in the coop 2 and 3 months old and they are not happy right now and it's 64 inside the coop. They have most their feathers. But, I don't have a broody keeping them warm either. I tried a broody for the first time and she ate 2 pipping chicks.sad.png

Sorry for your lose hugs.gif. Make sure you get a Strong electric fence charger to keep cattle out of chickens area. Cattle always think the grass is greener on other side of the fence. You will need to pound in a Ground Rod for the charger so it will have a stronger zap. Good Luck

Hmm I am in the Sierras and it routinely gets into the 60s (even with our current heat wave of 100s daily) at night-- lows are actually really low 60's like 62 degrees-- my chicks are 4 weeks old...  they- 15 Jersey Giants are fine-- off heat for a week, in coop sans heat for 2 nights now.... so not sure it was heat that was your problem-- how big is your coop? For how many birds?.....

Mine are between 4-8 days old and there were 30 of them.  They were in a brooder that is about 5'X5'.  The coop that they will be in is 14'X9'.  The 2 that died were some of the youngest so I think that with the cold they all may have piled up and the little ones ended up on the bottom and were smothered.

I have a neighbor who has cattle and he has a solar-electric fence that he puts up sometimes to block the cattle from certain areas when he is seperating to sell or whatever.  You might look into that as it is "moveable" and you would not have to tie into your electric system.  I know nothing about where he got it but you can probably find it on line.

We were fostering some donkeys for a while and had similiar problems as what you stated but not quite as bad.  If they had stayed any longer, I was going to look into the solar-electric fence too.

Wife to a patient husband, mother to 2 great kids, 1 hunting cat, ? gold fish (they had babies and we can't keep count), 7 4-H sex-links,3 Salmon Favorelles, 1 Mottled Houdans, 1 Cochin bantams,1 Araucana and 2 Llamas.

Thanks.  Since we are only renting we really don't want to spend alot especially to contain THEIR animals.  We decided that we will just remove the fence I put up in the pasture and put it outside of the pasture on the other side of the coop.
