I would not do that for birds that live in southern states (as OP is listed in AZ).  In the heat they need shallow dishes of water to wade in to help regulate their body temperature.  There's no way of keeping that water clean so I just clean that out several times a day.  They really do love wading in the water.  I use the small dishes left over from take out Chinese food.

They could have both a clean water source and a shallow wading dish.
