When I went to build a chicken coop, they told me not to even bother with the octagon chicken wire, its pretty easy for a raccoon to chew thru, not to mention other predators. I guess a big part of it depends on where you live. Ive also been told that sometimes they will reach in a decapitate a chicken, if the chicken is close enough to the edge.

The bummer is the other wire can be pretty expensive. I used some 1/2 by 1 inch welded square wire, you can see it in this picture. Its about 300 bucks for a 100 foot roll and Im on my third one. hmm.png You could probably find a lighter gauge with bigger openings cheaper than that, but myself, I wouldnt rely on regular chicken wire for protection.

i never had any problems maybe you are talking about the big 3 inch octagon wire i cans ee that but so far nothing got them and there have been raccons trying to break in i caught one ina modified rat trap after i see dirt displaced aorund the coop.   since the floor is wire they cant get in.  I had raccons in my coop eating chicken food in my old coop sometimes i forget to lock them up till 1:00 becuase i was away and my brothers ar complete retards and i was suprised they were all alive.  i dont think chicken breakins are that big weasels and coons are clever  but not too clever to take the time and chew through wire.

And about the wire i recomend rabbit wire with the small rectangles.  the chickens to this day jump into the wire thinking they can get out and cut themselves there so stupid.  i put food in my pen and they walk around the pen they dont know they must go through the door.

I believe most people would edit (fix rotation) their pictures before posting them.

backyard chickens has no such edit mode for pictures and im not manually editing them in paint either.  the way it should work is if i take a pic with my iphone vertically the picture otta be vertical but no

and anyways i did research and it seems raccons can bite through it but i havent had any issues with this wire and i dont like it you have to stretch it and stable.  use 1/2 hardware cloth its safer a raccon likes food thats already edible like some table scraps i feed the chickens digging through a wire wall takes time and they cant see the chickens anyway the whole hen house is enclosed with t1-11 so the chickens wont stick their heads out or anything plus i got a nice dog that hates coons but loves my chickens and the coop is rigged with night vision cameras that work off of ac in the ground so i can see whats going on from my garage pretty cool

x2.

Chicken wire is not at all predator proof - it is designed to keep chickens contained, not to keep them safe.  I used it on my coop to block them from roosting in the rafters, and I used it to surround my vegie garden so the chooks couldn't get at the vegies while free-ranging.  But I wouldn't use it where I need them safe from predators.

true i recently made a pen becuase i had freerange chickens the past 10 years and recently we made a new coop at my new house and they go in my garage and poop everywhere the 1 inch hex wire wont keep a fox from chewing throguh and thats what your talking about i can see that at daytime but my front yard i can see the chickens ( i live far from the road) so thats not a problem.  but for the side its ok but cloth is better its stiffer the hex rusts and is very floppy.  i bought the hex at tractor supply for 70 bucks it was 48x150 ft i sued almost all of it and i used steaks and sealed the wire down to the ground keeps chickens in and there too dumb to jump out.  When this stuff starts rusting ill go with the cloth

It's 14 guage. I have no idea what that means, but that is what the specs say. $300 for wire fencing seems insane regardless of specs.
