Why is my hen crowing? - Page 3

I would definitely try to put stuff out there to distract her.  Do they have an area to dust bath in?  You can just set aside a corner of the run and fill it with sand, peat and soft loamy soil.  That keeps my girls busy for hours.

 

Try a treat ball or take the plastic container that berries come in and fill it with seeds.  Let them knock that around trying to figure out how to get the goods out.

 

I also have lots of things from the garden I give to them this time of the year.  Below is an 8-ball zucchini that grew into this soccer ball sized thing.  I punched a few holes in it to get them started and they worked on this thing ALL DAY yesterday.  Below is my mama BO with her Blue Andalusian babies.  She's pecking out tiny bits and dropping it for them to eat.  Honestly, that gave me hours of entertainment just watching them.

That's spoon cute. I love the idea with the berry container. Very clever! I should be getting a lot if spaghetti squash from the garden soon. Maybe I can put one in for them to peck on.

Oh, I think they'd go nutso for spaghetti squash.  I've not given that to them raw yet.  (I'm sure it's fine.)  But I have taken the cooked hull and let them peck out what's left in there and that was deemed "good eats" by the girls.

 

And if you liked that last photo, you'll LOVE this one.  The little blondie of the group prefers to be up on Mom's back.  She's got some Koala in her or something.  She jumps up there all day long.

That's precious! I have a 15 week old hen who still tries to sit on her mom! She always sits on her while she laying an egg.

I also have a question in this matter. I have 1 hen and 1 rooster and they are about 2 1/2 months old. I was told they don't even go outside yet until 18 weeks which will be another 2 months. These are my first chickens so we just got two to start out with and I am still learning about them. My hen has started doing her half crow sound a few weeks ago. Why is she doing this? I can't see anything that would make her feel she is in danger, she isn't even at egg laying age yet, but she does every once in a while. Our rooster has yet to crow. Why is she crowing? Also if it is a dominance issue will she still lay eggs when it is time?
