Puppies!

Thread Starter

I just mailed our deposit for two LGD pups.  They were born on Aug. 4th and we will be able to go get them sometime after Labor Day.  I can't wait!  These will be our first LGDs so I am trying to find out everything I can about raising them so that we do a good job.  They will be guardians for our sheep (around 100 Dorpers), against coyotes and stray dogs mainly.  They are from working stock and will have been around sheep before they come to us.  Their mom is a Pyrenees x Polish Tatra and their dad is an Anatolian x Maremma.  We have had one dog attack that resulted in the loss of four lambs so we will be very happy when these boys grow up enough to guard our flock!

Heather, Homeschooling Mom to two boys, two dogs, 13 layers, hundreds of meaties; turkeys, steers, goats, and sheep!
We raise chicken, turkey, lamb, and beef for sale.  PM me if you live in Southern California and are interested in organically grown, pasture fed chicken, turkey, lamb, or beef.

Read a lot. They will probably not be ready to guard until around 2. I have a Pyreness puppy, she's around 5 months old. She barks a lot. She is catching on to commands quickly, I work with her everyday. She will be for my birds and yard. After I get all the commands taught to her I will begin E-collar training with her. We just stated this with our Border collie/ Lab mix. I have been watching youtube videos on this method and saw results in two hours with our border mix. Good luck with your puppies. YEAH for puppy kisses
