The mandarins have got a fire under my Dads butt to get working on the duck pen to finish it!!! We have put 5 x 5 pieces of wood for a boarder around the bottom and we have the frameing for the door done. We just have to put 2 x 4 pieces right under where the front of the coop starts so we have something to fasten the fenceing to block the ducks getting out or predators getting in (which today a coyote ran out in front of me). We are probably going to sink 2 x 4's under the ones above ground to help with stopping predators digging. My Dads friend had stopped by while we where finishing up with the 5 x 5's and he called it "fort nox". So I will get pictures after I paint what we got done so far, so tomarrow or the day after I will post them.
And my Dads friend has some eletric fencing he wants to get rid of. Does anyone use it on their ducks pen? I had an idea of putting it around the fenced area attached to the coop but would it hurt my other ducks that are allowed in the non-fully enclosed area (we just have some fence around trees to allow the ducks to run in a decent sized area but not have run of the yard or neighbors yard) if they bump into it? I wouldn't worry with the South side of the coop because of the yard going down hill and we made the 5 x 5's level so theres about a foot of wood on that side but under the coop (West side) the runners would be tall enough to bump it and thats the side that would only have the 2 x 4s. The North, East and South side have the 5 x 5's. The corner that brings the South and East together has a wedge like piece of wood to help with keeping the 5 x 5 level because of the drop in the yard (mentioned above) the ducks would just run into the 5 x 5's in that area. The corner bringing the North and East side together are just the 5 x 5's with no added height.
And with that being said, how low to the gound would you need the eletric fence to go to be useful? If I can make it just over the height of the drake runners I should not have an issue with the North, East, and South sides. The only idea I have for the West side (under the coop) was after putting the fence up, put the eletric fence then a piece of fence after the eletric to not allow the ducks to bump it. The reason for that is if a prdator really wants in it would just push into the fence causeing it to fold into the eletric fence hopefully then deturing it any further.
Any ideas, tips, well pretty much anything would be appriciated.
>>>> Also how does "sweet flag" fair with ducks?
Heres a couple of pictures now that I have finished painting it. Im going to be adding a fence on it on Thursday once I get paid. I'll take pictures hen the fenceing is up. Then we will just have to finish the door frame and cut plywood to enclose the peak.
