So it sounds like as long as there is a willing laying hen around and the roo is mating with her successfully-- 4 months is about the time you can expect him to be producing offspring (fertilized eggs actually).

we just had 6 lovley chicks hatch over the course of yesterday and this morning

will post pics in a bit

i have called them Habib's Legbars as they are fathered by a cream legbar and are what essentially makes a cotswold legbar

It is NOT true that your first egg will be fertile.Not saying that it definitely won't be BUT It depends on the breed and the individual rooster. My large fowl Cochin Rooster took 4 EVER to become fertile! Some roosters become sexually mature much later than others. You may get lucky and your rooster may be fertile as soon as your hen starts laying but it's also possible for your hen to lay for a couple months before the rooster becomes fertile. He will still breed her but just because you see mating taking place doesn't mean that he's getting the job done. Hope that helps! Good luck!

i was lucky and that pale yellow chick is a cream legbar x leghorn and the leghorn mum was only 18 weeks

i only put one egg in as a tester

now  gonna bang in 20 of teh leghorn eggs in the next few days

i seem to get the best results from newspaper

i think it must be the UK news LOL, the paper is pretty rough so they seem to grip it quite well

so far not had an issue using newspaper

plus i use a whole newspaper not just a few sheets so that gives the flooring a bit of a soft bounce a bit like long pile carpet or tissuepaper

cant really think of anything else tried so many options and newspaper for me was the best results i got
