Mourning loss of rooster *accidently* killed by my husband

Thank you to all of you who have given your positive support. I think it will take some time for both me and my husband to heal from this ordeal. As many of you have said, accidents do happen and despite my initial anger, I know that is what this was, not a malicious act.

What did he say? Express remorse? Make excuses? Has he been cruelly violent before? If he is truly remorseful, then I probably would let it go. With some expressed concerns about violent behavior towards a basically helpless animal... And a warning about a repeat of such behavior.

Home of the world's cutest dachshund, one crazy blue heeler, two cats,
one fat pony, and many (but not too many!) chickens

Can anyone tell me, how many are too many chickens?

No, he generally loves animals and has no history of violent behavior. He is very remorseful, but that of course won't help Romeo at this point. I did manage to save 5 eggs from today and stuck them in our incubator so hopefully I will at least get a Romeo Jr. I hadn't ever hatched eggs from him before but was hoping to in the future.

Forgive me if I seem insensitive, but have you been tolerating this rooster attacking you for over 5 years? Sounds to me like your husband has the patience of a saint!

Eggs will retain a high level of fertility for the next two weeks and even moderate fertility for at least a week longer.  Why not set as many as you can collect?

I would not blame my husband one bit.  There is no reason an animal should be harassing him on the property that HE the human owns.  Its sad but humans come first always unless its intentional neglect/abuse. Hope you get a lil Romeo Jr out of your eggs.

I don't agree ever with kicking an animal, any animal, ever.  Booting him out of the way?  You betcha.  Would I forgive my otherwise loving husband?  Yes, I would.  He didn't mean to kill him but, kicking anything without thinking about the possible consequences is something that he will have to live with.  Unfortunately, so will you.

I'm so sorry for your loss hugs.gif

I hope you get your little Romeo, Jr.

No, i would not forgive my husband for killing my pet. You dont "kick" living animals so hard that you kill them..
There are other ways to handle attacking roos and if you cant deal with it..(and i dont blame you one bit if not!) Then you can rehome them or cull them humanely...
But to kick a little animal hard enough to kill it?...
If my husband ever... oh dear god, his life woudnt be worth living anymore after i was done with him.
And thats no BS talk..

I sorta like my wife more that I have ever liked any chicken.

And I kinda hope you really feel the same way about your

husband.

If you've put up with a rooster attacking you for five years,

that's your choice. Don't know as I would do that.

(On the other hand...My wife and I were into for some reason

or another. I had just bought one of those VW Rabbits. Put it

her name, I did. And because she was mad at me, she sold "her"

car for $50.00.  Yes, I was mad about it. But I've still got her.)

Spook...Love requires a lot of forgiving.

On both sides.
