I would be so grateful for any home made formulas that Backyard Chicken Members have used. I know that everyone is probably sick and tired of hearing about the heat (me too) but I'm new, and dealing with unseasonal temperatures well above 100. We had 111 two days ago. We've been using the Save A Chick Electrolyte and Vitamin Packets, but they're not available locally, and we're running out.
PLEASE, if you've got a recipe that helps chickens cope with the heat, I'd love to try it out.
Thanks everyone,
Best wishes for cooler weather.

Hi .. Im sorry I dont have a recipie for you, but I thought Id share what I do for my birds in the heat. Im north of you in Washington state and we have had the warm weather and while we have only ranged in the 90's that is still very hot for our critters because they just are not used to it ... So I do a couple things.....

* I take Ziplock bags I put Peas, Carrots, berries.. what ever treats I have even meal worms add water and freeze. Then the next day I take off the bage and put the treat Popcycle in a dish for the chickens to peck at... They love it... Its cold , gives them something to peck out and they get extra water with out even knowing it.

* I also buy watermelon or other melons.. I cut them in half, If they are really large I quarter them. Freeze them and then give to then chickens.. Again the frozen fruit cools them and they love the treat and get extra fluids.

* I freeze liter and 2 liter bottles filled with water and lay them around the run or coop.. the Chickens will snuggle up to them to cool down.

* I put Frozen bottles of water in a open dish of water.. the birds drink it and will splash in it :)

Dear JNB and Buff Orpington 88,

Thank you SO much for your responses! Fortunately, this is a fairly rural area, and melons and such are readily available. I wish I knew if zuccini was safe for chickens, EVERYbody is trying to get rid of it -- almost aggressively. As for the electrolyte formula, I think I have everything I need. Anyway, I'm really grateful, and I know my gals and guy will be as well.

If they do anything cool, while staying cool, I'll try to upload a photo -- it's high time I learned how

Sincere thanks and best wishes,

Ellen

Hey Aricisom,

Thanks for the culinary scoop, That's great to know! As the summer wears on, zuccini sort of settles to the bottom of the veggie food chain, or pecking order, or something, so to sp eak.
You almost have to feel sorry for it. Any way I saw this cool idea of a frozen veggie and fruit loaf. The member who did it would have sent Martha Stewart crying; it was seriously over the top and lovely. I think I can manage to shred some zukes and plop them into popsicle thingys.

Anyway, I appreciate the info -- stay cool and comfy.

Ellen
