Nashua, NH
Hello everyone.
I am a relatively new resident to the city of Nashua and being a young, naive first-time homeowner, assumed "Live Free or Die" would mean I could have chickens. So now I have 7 hens and just learned that per city ordinances, most zones in Nashua prohibit chickens! Now, I KNOW there are others like me in Nashua and I'm hoping to gather support to have the laws changed. I have 1.5 acres...what am I going to do w/ that land if I can't have at least chickens?! While I'm sure those of us in Nashua who are defying the law would like to remain under the radar and out of public view, I think we should try to change the law. Who's with me? Anyone...Bueller?

I have helped a lot of people fight for their right to have chickens. PM me if you would like some articles written adn facts to help support your right to have them.

B/C of the law in NH (which subsequently has changed) we had to buy 12 chicks. So, I bought 12 straight-runs, of which 4 were roosters (& for anyone doing the math, we lost 1 hen a few months ago due to an impacted crop; someone fed her a piece of green pepper). So apparently a neighbor complained about the roos, which were very loud, however, had they actually come and talked to us, we would have told them they wouldn't be around for long (we have eliminated the roos, which are now in my freezer). Anyways, I guess the complaint is why Code Man showed up and he insinuated that if there weren't any more complaints, he wouldn't be back. My concern is that I don't know which neighbor complained and therefore can't be certain they won't complain again just for having hens and the law is NOT on my side. Furthermore, if there are people in Nashua who apparently are "breaking the law", why can't we just get the law changed?!

Hey there. I am also a Nashua resident and will soon be getting a few (maybe 2-3) hens for our backyard. I didn't realize they were prohibited in Nashua. Maybe I need to chat with our neighbors before we go final with our decision?

Do you still have yours?

I have two tiny chickens, live in Nashua right by the river - there are ducks and geese and other critters cruising all over the place, but now my landlord won't let me have them. Two TINY little chicken hens. So what can I do?
I think I am going to move just because of that. There is so much room here, you could almost think they are part of the herd of wild ducks and geese. Duhh.

I am in Nashua and I just found out I can't have chickens where I live. I was told by one of the local tractor supply places that there are plenty of chickens being raised in Nashua that are not in the R40 or R30 Zones. The city told me I can file for a use variance but that I need to show that it is a hardship for me to not raise chickens and and that is not the case. So how do I get around this?? My 7 year old son is very sad about this.

How do your neighbors feel about them? Honestly that's all that matters, otherwise no one will really know you even have them unless they wander off like mine sometimes do? as long as you don't get a rooster they are pretty quiet.

Our neighbors love them and so do their kids, we give everybody free eggs and nobody complains :)

My neighbors are fine but I don't feel comfortable spending all that money on building a coop and yard as I had planned and then be told I have to get rid of them. I am going to try and file for a land use variance but the city already told me if I cant prove a hardship it will never be approved. :(
