Anyone tie dyeing? Added pics!

I bought a tie dye kit and my two sons and I just made 5 shirts -- two for each of them, one for me. Anyone else doing this? My kids are 6 and 7 and it really was a great project! I hope they look cool.

One of my sons likes lots of color, tie dye is a great way for him to wear lots of cool colors without being girly and he loves it! Its amazing how a six year old can be aware of how we gender class colors, makes me sad, but this is a great project for us. So now we have them wrapped in plastic bags and are waiting til tomorrow to get them rinsed and dried, killing me to wait! I cannot wait to see how they look!

We used to tie dye stuff all the time when I was a kid.  My mom was into alot of crafts, I think it helped keep her sane with 5 little girls.

We made bandanas all the time and died old sheets to use in sewing for our barbie dolls.

It is good to hear of people doing creative things with their kids.  I feel sorry for those kids that never get to explore their creativity.

Right now I am getting into dying fabric for quilting.  I have tried salt dying, and it makes a pretty neat effect on the dyed fabric.

By the way, they will look cool.  Tie-dye is always cool!

Did you buy a kit for this or just mix up a selection of dyes to do it?

Here are the five shirts we did.  We bought a kit, I thought the whole kit was great.  I have enough dye to do several more shirts, unsure what pattern we will do next.  Some of them didn't turn out like we thought, but still happy with them.

Thanks for the kind words! We went out to eat a few days ago and we wore our shirts, I forgot we were the tie dye family and we really got a lot of attention. Really not that expensive, tshirts are on sale for school and the kit was 15 on amazon.

It was a bit messy (but manageable), but I am not one to fuss over the mess, we have two decks and we used one to dye over, but could have used drop cloth. We had fun! Amazing the number of parents who said to me at daycare, wow, I would never do that, too messy! Really? The kids will always remember it, and they won't remember the mess!

Love the shirts, very colorful, you guys did a really nice job on them.

Another variation you might be interested in trying is discharge dyeing. It's almost the same process, except you start with a colored shirt and use bleach water to take out the dye. Almost all of our t-shirts are done that way. It's fun, and I like having shirts that are unique, there are no two alike when they're hand tied.
