I am afraid I may have a dry membrane with one of my chick eggs. What does a dry membrane look like? My chick pipped about...12 hours ago (?). The pip is still rather small but the chick is still going at it. It has not broken the membrane. The membrane looks kinda yellow, perhaps? Every time it pecks, it never displaces anything - it just goes straight down. Any help is appreciated.

It's possible, the membrane should be pretty transparent. It may be dry if it's a solid white/yellow color. Dab it will just a few drops of warm water. Be careful not to get it in the chicks beak. And make sure you are looking at the memnbrane around the actually chick, not the membrane right inside the egg shell. The membrane right inside the egg is has always been a solid white/yellow color with my experienece and thats just how it is. It's the membrane around the chick that you need to worry about. Whats your humidity? If it's high enough then I wouldn't worry, it can sometimes take over 24 hours for them to get out. Humidity should be around 65%-70%.

If there is no shell, but there is membrane and it has been exposed to air over 10 hours its probably to dry for a little chick to get through. What you can do, and what Ive done in the past is taken a q tip and diped it in a cup of water and put it directly omn the membrane. Do it every time it gets too dry, it should help. PM me if you need more help :) good luck.
