Caused by a dog attack this evening:
Her tail feathers gone. Large chunk of skin missing thats appox 3 inches across exposing the muscle, which is also gashed open. There is loose skin and fat globs dangling on the outer edges of the wound. I cannot afford a vet visit. If there was any way I could do it I'd have taken her there immediately. I had peroxide, sprayable neosporin, sprayable bactricine, and gel neosporin on hand. I washed it, cut feathers, and covered it all in neosporin jelly, and once that started to dry I sprayed it with the liquid neo.
I have leftover baytril for my dog at 68mg tablets. These I broke up and fed bits in her water and crumbles. she ate the crumbles but doesnt care for the water. Her wound looks awful and im scared about her future. I have her in my room in a cage on a towel. please look at the photos and give me any advise on further treatment. Shes been thu so much today. I dont know what else to do for her.

Should I keep it moist? Let it dry? The yellow is fat, the pink is muscle and the white line in the muscle is a deep cut filled with neosporin. Am I doing the wrong thing by not putting her down? shes acting ok but i know this must hurt really bad and im terribly worried about infection. There is no way to close the skin, its just gone. will it grow back over the muscle or make scar tissue? Any advise you can give me on home treatment is really appreciated. I just want to do the right thing by her. Ill be up late, If you want to call please do 931-551-6373 its 12:19am now my time.

Hi there- I'm so glad you went back out to check! I know it looks awful and is so scary to go through, but- believe it or not- as far as wounds go, that one looks like it's got a pretty good chance of healing up! You did the right thing by cleaning it up right away and cutting feathers that could spread infection to the wound as it heals. I have not used the specific products or antibiotics you mentioned, but I have heard them used commonly on this board. (I usually use betadine instead of peroxide and a product called vetericyn in place of neosporin- no reason at all other than personal preference- all will work for their intended purpose). I know the dosage for aspirin for pain relief and help with the inflammation is on the board too if you search it, so you can help her be a little less sore in the a.m. Aside from washing the dog mouth germs out of the wound, the next thing on the list is to keep the flies away from her! You mention she is in your room, can she stay there? Do you feel pretty confident that you can keep the flies out of the wound there? I wouldn't worry too much about her not drinking the water right away- chickens can be in shock for quite a while after an attack, it's a good sign she was interested in the crumbles. As far as keeping the wound moist or letting it dry out- it is my preference to keep a moist protective coat over the bulk of the wound, but it will dry out some between applications and that's okay. First, you want to focus on getting that deep "white line" to heal cleanly and without a pocket for infection and allow the rest of the wound to scab up during that time. The wound will heal from the edges and you'll want to watch it to make sure that the healthy skin replaces the scab instead of just growing over it. We'll have time to get to that though in the future- I wanted to check in and let you know you're doing right by your chicken!

Sounds like TeamChaos gave good advice. I agree that chickens can survive some horrible wounds.

Just a few things to add:

Do not use the antibiotic cream if it has "caine" type pain reliever, like benzocaine or lidocaine. "Caines" are toxic to birds.

Here's some great info about treating wounds, pay attention to post #16:

Thank you Teamchaos and Imp for your advice, I checked the links and dosed her with aspirin. You both gave me some hope. The link with post #16 was great. I've saved it for future reference. Ill clean it out again tomorrow and ill keep posted. I just checked on her and pet her, she's asleep and gotta get some sleep myself, 3:49am now. Ill check back in tomorrow. THANK YOU

i also think it will heal weal just keep her from having to move very far for food and water and keep the area cleaned and free of feathers, you should be fine.. Good luck

You are doing SO great so far and everyone has given you such great info!! Baytril is a great broad spectrum antibiotic...just do your math homework that you are not giving her too much OR not enough. IF you cut away more feathers by the "ends" of the wound [head to tail wise] you can use some of that paper first aid tape to help keep the skin from flexing. it will help the wound to heal closed. I did this on a roo that got his head tore open...worked great. Took one month for that wound to close up, so you have your time frame.
She is gonna be your "special" house chicken for a while...enjoy her company. SO glad you can keep her in the house where she is safe and clean.
You can also give her vitamin water and high energy foods to help jump start her shocked system. Cooked eggs / mealworms/ all those goodies and TONS OF TLC....I swear my that medicine.....lol

Hi All, So far so good I think. Personality wise she is acting the same. I've kept her in a large wire dog crate with a towel bedding for most of the time inside the house. I've let her walk about inside some (wood floors YAY) and I've also let her visit outside for about 30 minutes a day with her coop mates in the grass. I've been standing right there with her watching for flies and incase the other girls want to pick at her. So far no problems. She is tending to want to hang back a little from them though. I thought seeing them and the fresh clean air would do her good.

The wound: The edges seem to be doing better, but I don't really know. I tried to make my own saline solution yesterday to wash it. It was more like rinsing it though. Im scared to touch it aside from aplying the neosporin all over it. Thats really all Ive done to it. It looks gross and painful and to me it looks like something that would be impossible not to get infected. Its wet and slimy with dry spots today. It seems the edge of her wing where we already trimmed it lays right ovver the cut thats in the center of the exposed muscle. would it be painful to her to cut the feathers back further? These are my first chickens and I really dont know if theres such a thing as cutting the feather too short as far as pain goes. Should I get some of this blue kote I keep reading about? what would be the best solution for washing the wound, and should I be doing it daily, more or less? Should I keep neosporin on it 24/7 or something else altogether? or alternate between it and letting it dry out some? Is the skin supposed to grow from the edges in and over closing over the bare spot and muscle slowly, or will it form a new skin slowly all over it even over the center at the same time? Im most worried that im not doing enough to clean and salve it. I dont know if what Im doing is enough or the right way. for me just looking at it, it just seems impossible that such a large spot of bare muscle with a cut in that too would heal over without being covered or getting infected. Its really late and shes sleeping but tomorrow I will take a new photo and post it.
