Yes, in our area they will range in a circle type pattern, their circle is usually about 3 miles a day. They usually go back and roost high in trees in the same area, unless they are uneasy or scared by something in that area.

My turkeys free range with my chickens all day. They don't go to far.

City Savvy turned Country Chic.... what was I thinking?  I have 1 amazing man, 3 Girls, 4 dogs, 20 Chickens,11 Ducks, 6 Turkeys, 1 seriously messy house and I couldn't ask for anything else. OK, maybe a cleaning fairy.....

Mine free range all day and they don't go anywhere near a 3 mile radius.  They stay in my yard or pasture...  Mostly they like to hang around my outdoor dog kennel and tease my dogs all day long! tongue.gif

Mom to 3 human children, 9 horses, 6 dogs, 5 cats, 2 rabbits, 6 BO (Prim, Butterscotch, Blueberry, Bertha, Tiny, and Olivia), 4 Production Reds (Scorpion, Honey, Peep, and Gertrude), 2 Black Australorps (Sisu and Cuddly), and many youngsters...

Mine dont range all day, but get 3 to 4 hours in the evening to run and forage. I like to watch them and keep an eye out for the neighbors dog since they wont keep him on a chain rant.gif

I do the same thing with my Turkeys I have acres of land for them to free range for about 4 hours on but for some reason from time to time the Chickens and Turkeys want to venture across the street you know the grass is always greener LOL.

My dogs have been taught not to harm the Fowl but they are allowed to chase them to the back yard and woods were most of my property is.

Some times they will disappear for a while in the woods but soon as they hear the back door they come a running Chickens and Turkeys I do give them treats from time to time and I think that's what they have in mind that and the company.

As long as my Great Dane is out side I don't have much trouble with other dogs coming near the property.

The one thing, in poultry, that I've never had and always wanted, is turkeys. This thread is good for me. Now, do turkeys scratch up your yard, garden, and flower beds like chickens? I would love to have a few in the spring, but This is why I hesitate.......Pop

Mine are safely confined inside a 1/2 acre orchard, where the coyotes and stray dogs can't get them. Also, they can not annoy the neighbors if I make sure they stay home.

I don't notice mine doing a lot of scratching, but they can eat a lot of plant life, so they would be hard on a garden. They've eaten all the flower plants for as far as their necks will stretch through the fence.

My half grown Midget White and his pet duck are confined in a dog run with a covered top where the crows can't get to them and kill them.  I'll have to wait and see how big he ends up.  He might have to stay in a covered run all his life.  The crows have killed an 8 pound duck at my house, so poultry has to be either really large or in a battle ready flock to be out without cover.

At my house Even though I have 4 acres I have a neighbor about a half acre or less by my we share a drive so they are close( we are working on moving down the road where the closest neighbor will be a couple acres away) I always "babysit" my birds so that they dont get in to anything or leave my yard. Once we move I will be able to let them out longer wee.gif

They love their foraging time. I havent had a prob with scratching just like Oregon said they LOVE their greens.. I love the turkeys they are so funny and sociable..
